De Niro exits Martin Campbell's thriller

Would have been a fantastic combo

    Source: Variety

Robert De Niro arrived in Massachusetts this week to begin shooting Martin Campbell’s dark thriller, Edge Of Darkness, in which he would have played a government operative trying to cover up the death of a young woman.

And today, Robert De Niro left the movie completely, citing creative differences. Now that’s fast.

The thriller, based on Campbell’s own groundbreaking BBC series, stars Mel Gibson as the policeman father of the dead girl who, in his grief-driven investigation, stumbles upon a government cover-up that goes way up. Way, way up.

The movie also stars Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic – but no longer De Niro. The plan at the moment is to shoot around his scenes until a replacement actor can be cast. Could be a couple of days, could be a couple of weeks, but we imagine that a replacement will be found pretty damn quickly.

The movie's producer, our very own Graham King, had negotiated a SAG waiver in order to shoot the movie – so, if the Screen Actors Guild calls a strike during production, he’d be able to finish it. That’s what we call preparation – but not even the esteemed King could possibly have seen this one coming.

Apparently Campbell was doing an excessive number of takes of De Niro hitting a golf ball out of a sand trap. De Niro got pissed, they started screaming at each other and he walked. Too bad for Bob, it's supposed to be an excellent script. But it's been so long since he worked with a real director I guess even a semi-hack like Campbell must be too demanding for him.

I hear Ray Winstone is replacing him.

Ray Winstone was cast and early word is that the script is fantastic. De Niro has'nt impressed me in a very long time and I'm pretty sure that De Niro's leaving the picture may be a good thing. He's turned into a lazy actor whom is happy to take the money and run.

This is the same Martin Campbell who directed Casino Royale? Id rate him very highly on that alone

Yeah, I fully agree, which is a pity, because when he wants to be he can be absolutely incredible to watch. He needs to go get his groove back. :D

What's this new Pacina/De Niro movie coming out? Saw a poster up for in the cinema a few weeks back but know/heard nothing about it.

I didn't mean that he was a bad director. I loved Casino Royale too but it's basically a rip on the Bourne Franchise. Campbell did a good job but nothing someone else couldn't have done.

Righteous Kill. It's already out in the U.S. I believe. And out here at the end of the month some time.

I'm not sure there's many good role out there for him anymore. Or least nothing he hasn't done a million times before, cops, criminals, etc. Being a great actor doesn't mean anything if you can't find a great role. But hopefully Frankie Machine with Michael Mann will happen.

It' out here in a few weeks but from the reviews it's been getting it may be best to wait till the DVD. The main draw seems to be the pairing of Pacino and De Niro but that seems to be the only positive in it.
