Strobist is recommended by many people. Some lighting systems are described here.

Cheers for that. That video gives a brilliant crash course on understanding basic light.

ok so ive read up a good bit. I just need some opinions,

Im thinking of getting a decent strobe for the camera [canon] itself, and setting it up to sync wireless for umbrellas/soft box, then getting another cheap one for second umbrella etc.

Saying that i dont see myself using it on the camera itself, so just go for cheap ones? Also yet to figure out if these, would be a cheaper alternative [not specifically that one, its looks bad] but considering these have a control on power aswell !

    thanks

I was looking at the ones from Lencarta, they look good for the money. But at the moment I am going down the strobist road.

I have a 580ex2 and am either going to get some Vivitar's or some Canon 430's.
The benefit of getting the 430's is that my 580 can control them once they are in sight. I have new 8 channel ebay triggers but they are not that reliable.

I got flash light stands and umbrellas off that guy selling the vivitars, they are okay for the price.
But the top of it is metal so you need to put tape on it before attaching your flash (apparently there is a small chance the flash firing whilst touching off metal will short it).

I got gels (cto, ctb etc.) from this ebay user.. I got pc sync cords off this guy.
And I got stands off this guy. They are ok but not as professional as he makes them out to be.

Yeah any stand would do. Just check how high it goes, how much weight it can take and if it collapses down enough to make it easy to carry. Don't forget you need a light/umbrella mount on top of that to hold the flash and umbrella. Similar to this thing on that site you linked the stand from.
