    i am trying to download a few updates on my mac

    and its keeps coming up "bill of materials was not found " whats that

    What updates are you downloading? System updates? Via Software Update or the Apple site?

    Anyway afaik the bill of materials are files that are used by OS X's installer app, they keep track of what files to install and their permissions, something like that. You may just have downloaded a corrupted installer file or there's a problem with your receipts folder.

    Have you been using any clean-up apps lately? Or deleting stuff from your library folder?
