right so, Im going to format and reinstall windows on the desktop
when doing this I wish to create another partition so that windows will be seperate to my files

how big will my windows partition need to be?
I know how to move the files music etc and then change the path, but how will I move the programs such as avg to the partition?
or will they have to be reinstalled.......prefer not to do this.........

my plan is to first create the partition move all files then reinstall windows to formatted drive

ok If its vista you need atleast 15GB of space..... :O (someone spank me if im wrong)
for XP you need 1.5 GB.

As far as Avg goes with each new operating system you'll have to reinstall it. This only takes 2-3 mins after all..

for xp 1,5gb is not enough. it's enough for bare system, but xp uses pagefile and hiberfile with default settings, so u need to assign for C at least 5-6 gb. if u can spare little more (like 10 or 15) that would be great. You'll have enough space to install your essential apps (office, itunes and so) without beeing bothered by "disk space short" balloon help tip :P

just remember to install your games on D:.

For Vista you'll need at least 20-25 gb, but if you can spare 30gb it would be great.

Remember that both systems, XP and Vista, tend to gain weight with time (even if maintained properly) so you have to leave some space for that. :D

As for your apps. I'm afraid you'll have to install them again. Prepare your cds and download essentials like antivirus or antispyware software from web.

Don't forget bout your network drivers - once connected, you'll be able to download everything else.
