Hi, I'm heading into second year FM, and I am just looking for some advice about what module that I should pick, the choice is:

    Complex Analysis
    Introduction to Differential equations
    Computational maths 2

I don't have a clue what the consequences of choosing what will have, I've gotten NO info from DCU about it, even on how many you need to choose (1 I'm pretty sure)

    Anyhue any advice is appreciated:D

Complex analysis in second year? DCU do things upside down. Complex Analysis has more applications in Engineering though I'm not sure what level that course would be at but it can be heavy stuff. The other two seem more applicable to Finance

First of all, if you have competed first year then you will know how horrible analysis is so the name COMPLEX analysis should put you off straight away.

Computational Maths 2 is nothing like Computational Maths 1. In 1, you use matlab and its kinda like Programming in first year. Apparently 2 is completely different and much harder.

I chose Differential Equations simply because everyone else was doing it. I didnt like the lecturer, he treats you like an idiot at the start so I stopped going...BIG MISTAKE! he also hated me because he heard me asking around whether I should wear my hair straight or curly for going out that nite! :D also he gave us our first assignment during rag week.. clearly didnt get that done. and then i was so far behind... needless to say i failed but only barely. If i had done any of the assignments it would have been grand. Just did the repeat there in August and I really think I would have understood it a lot better if I had gone to the lectures. It isnt actually that hard and I would surprisingly recommend it!

I liked Computers so much the first time round, I'm very tempted to do it again.

It doesn't sound as if choosing any particular one helps a particular career path though..

    Threads been done Cosin, http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055371161

I picked Computational Mathematics II btw but we can change choice up to a certain date anyway

complex analysis refers to complex numbers - you know like the 'i' and stuff

differential equations is ok - its mainly differentiation and a bit of matrices and physics - so if you dont like those, then dont choose this

computational maths 2 is more matlab.

choice is yours - none of these mean anything towards your final grade or will make you any more or less of an actuary

Gross simplification of what is an immensely complicated area of maths. I'd say steer clear of it unless you really have a flair for analysis type subjects
