    Hey,
Just said id let WIT Students know about a nice broadband offer available from o2.

    You pay €20 for the modem and it's €13 a month for 10gig limit. That's a 12 month contract.

    There's also €15 a month with a 5gig limit with a 30 day contract.

Nice one !! I'd say it could be very usefull for some of the students with crappy/ no BB where they are staying. Of course if a huge insurge of users such as college students coming down for another year comes in and starts using this I'd imagine the speeds are going to go down the tubes :P .

Sure they all draw from the same source so as you said if you get a sudden influx of demand on it, you might as well be on dial-up again. I'd go with ntl and some of the packages that are discussed in the waterford city forum. They would be more reliable would offer better download speeds and reliability and also would only cost about 10 euro more for the basic ntl package.

would be a big help to those though in riverwalk and manor.

I'm unsure if you are saying that NTL is available in Riverwalk/Manor - I would highly doubt that :p No matter where you are, most providers have a contention ratio so if there is demand your ****ed anyway.

According to another topic about this on Boards, o2 have always been reliable and offered decent broadband even at peak times.

no, read the above i said that o2 would be a help to those living in river walk and manor who cannot get NTL for obvious reasons and not that NTL is available in riverwalk or manor.Does that clear it up?

This contention ratio is more susceptible for latency on this mobile broadband packages than your fixed line Broadband. As has been previously said in the Waterford City forum NTL has a very acceptable package that as a user of this package for two years, with only 3 faults i find that there is no latency or contention on the line.

The reason these mobile broadband packages under-perform a lot of the time is because their throughput is actually only about half of what is is advertised. There maximum speed is advertised but it is very rare that you would find one of these modems working on full 3.6mb capacity. It just doesn't happen. These mobile modems all draw from the same source which never equally distributes the bandwidth to users. Those closer to the source tend to benefit more than those on the periphery.

Anyways it is still a good offer for those students who don't spend hours on a computer like myself and yourself, It's a competitive rate i just think that for a little extra money they could avail of a better offer from NTL.

Who is the internet provider of the broadband that is already supplied to Riverwalk?
Just interested to know as I hope to god it isn't terribly slow. The internet is as important to me as food and water!

Hi, I'm not sure of the provider but unless they have changed throughout the summer the broadband in there is a joke to be honest and you will experience unbelievably slow broadband speeds by a regular internet users standards whilst you live there. I'm drawing on experience of living there in first year and been a visitor there in second year. The broadband was useless for the last two years. It's a shared connection between everyone which wasn't very quick to begin with. The fact that they can advertise their apartments as being broadband friendly is a complete and utter joke and quite frankly pi55es me off. That was the reason i went there for my first year instead of anywhere else because it promised broadband and being a computing student it was very important to me.

I know of three of my mates living there last year and indeed this year that have used the Mobile Broadband as an alternative to using riverwalks broadband because what with the BEBO EFFECT and all you'll have everyone in riverwalk just logged onto bebo for ages, eating bandwidth, whilst there are others that need to use said bandwidth for proper things.

    **rant over :)

    Thanks for answering :P
The problem for me is that I stream tv programs....
So because of this the Mobile Broadband probably wouldn't be a very smart thing to get seeing as I would have the possibility of going over the 10GB per month limit.
I am thinking that I might just download/stream a program in the campus and then have it ready for later when I get home. So my question is - is the speed at the campus good enough to actually make this plan work and if not what would you recommend I do? (Mobile, pay for own line, etc....)

My torrents were downloading at some crazy rate whenever I was in the library during the year, so you could certainly use the campus to download whatever you want. However, such a thing is ill-advised as Computer Services are generally vigilant in enforcing the terms of service and you don't want your MAC ID or account banned from the network near exam time!

And what exactly do these terms of service frown upon that could get you banned?

The use of illegal downloading / uploading. The PCs in the college are for "Education Use" only. Technically, your not allowed on any sites like Boards, Bebo, Meebo/MSN etc. Everyone does it but those who download / upload heavily tend to get kicked of the network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 Mr. Blah

Well I have my own laptop so won't be using the PCs on the campus. I will stream from ninjavideo.com and then watch when I get back to apartment or something.
O2 Mobile Broadband is looking like a decent option to possibly take. I will wait until I get to Waterford and check out the internet around the place before purchasing anything I think :D

Hey can you access all ports with o2 broadband because if you cant then streaming and downloading will be really bad not really bad but hmm maybe still worth 13 € a month

Not that I am doubting you at all, but I have never heard of anyone being blocked from the network. I know a few people that maxed out the Rapidshare limit and they were fine. Maybe its only for p2p that they really care ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

There have been people kicked off it,trust me i know firsthand.:(

I would have the same doubts but I know of a good few people who wouldn't have just abused the system, they took the piss. Maybe they just got strict last year, but there were a good few boots/bans.

If they bothered to - you could be expelled from college for doing it. If the IRAA (or whatever they are called) made a case to the ISP and traced it to the college - your rightly ****ed. (Though, im not sure if its all that common them doing that)

but as you said "Doing something wrong" lol sure if you download a movie or music sure its not a big deal and no one cares but if they are that strict I would always be aware that they can kick you for coffing hmm they need to chill it a bit

You do realise that illegal downloading is taken very seriously in recent years (in general), and the college block people from even using sites like Bebo? :p I cant blame them for being strict - college could get sued!

Having seen it in action, I'ld say best avoided. It was like dial up.

The way the technology works, the more people that try to use it, the slower it gets, in a big way.

u've seen the o2 one or the manor village? i think manor village broadband is worse than dialup.. anybody else tried the o2 deal? im really considering it

Both actually, but its about 2 years since I have stepped foot inside MV so it would be unfair of me to comment on it.

I was talking about the o2 package.

i got it last week.... pretty fast most times during the day. slow enough between 8 and 11 though but still worth the e13 per month and it's miles better then 3 mobile broadband
