Sorting my pictures...

Dunno if this is the correct place for this so I'll throw it on the computer forum as well here...

I've thousands of photos on my laptop at this stage and two folders in particular are a right mess.

I have one folder with about 1000 pictures of a trip to Boston and New York and another folder with about 200 pictures which were taken by a friend. The time and date on my camera was wrong so I can't sort them out like that. I want to merge the folders and manually organize the pictures according to the time I remember them being taken.

    Can this be done?

I've tried it with a few pictures already but it's difficult work and tedious and when I go to put them on a slideshow they are all mixed up again!

Plus will they appear all mixed up in Windows Photo Gallery does anyone know? Or can I just sort them in there?

You can bulk copy all the photos from one folder into the other using Windows Explorer.

After that you will probably have to look at renaming them. As you say the file time is wrong, I am not sure if there's a quick and dirty way for you to do this. Possibly you will have to rename them and sort on name to keep them in the order you want.

    Unless someone has another suggestion?

I might give that an old whirl there and see what I can make out of it.

If I get rid of Picasa after sorting though the stuff, will the pics still be in the sorted order or must they then always be opened with Picasa?

By the way lads thanks for the help!

If you want any changes in order to stick, then you will need to change some attribute of the file so windows can sort them the way you want. You could do this by selecting a batch and doing a bulk rename or you could use a program to edit the exif data of your files and sort them like that.

    Here's an example using lightroom.
