Whats the law regarding front number plates on Classic cars, Im not running them on either of my beetles, 62 and 54, nor do I intend to!

Where do I stand with the guards???

Ive been stopped once and told him I just got the car and it had fallen off as the cars so low!

I had none on the front of my bug for a while and when pulled up at a routine tax & insurance checkpoint the first thing TJ&TJ asked about was "were was my front licence markings" or something equally obscure. It took me a couple of seconds to cop what he was on about. I was able to show him the plate in the passenger footwell, told him it had fallen off and he was happy enough with that.
I've had it on since but I have been thinking of ditching the front plates from the bug and the bus...

Well by law you have to display them on the front and on the rear of your vehicle.

I was pulled a few years back for having a small one. It was motorcycle sized and I trimmed it so it would fit without blocking the air intake beneath the bumper. Got away with it for years but then I was stopped and he told me to rectify it and bring it to the station for him to inspect, otherwise he'd summons me.

    I changed it !

with the barrier free tolling on the M50, you can be sure they'll get stricter from now on.

At the end of the day the gardai are just doing there job i suppose. Front and rear plates are required by law and for a good reason...i.e. so vehicles can be easily traced. Re the M50 cameras etc ....I have heard that number plate offences (i.e. wrong type, dirty, obscured, missing, trade plate incorrectly dispayed etc etc) will soon be dealt with by way of a ticket rather than summons.

re american style plates, again these ar not (generally) compliant with the law...and I suppose some motorists would genuinely mistake them for US plates (i.e. even though it has an Irish registration on it). I know in the North and UK police are usually more strict on these matters.
I saw a UK reg Hi-Lux (american style pick up) with US style plates on it at mosney a few years ago .The owner had large normal-style plate hanging over the plates front and rear for use on the road (the normal plates were held on trade-plate-like with elastic straps). See pic below....
