    Hey,

Im going into 3rd year in Product design. I love the course. I know a good few people in the other years so chances are Ill get t know your year too. The small class is great cause every one knows every one so your not stuck in a lecture hall with 100s of people you dont know.

I'm going into second year. Small class is definitely a big advantage. Everyone gets equal amount of help and tuition, which is great. Sometimes more attention is paid to better students, but in DIT, this is not the case.

However, this means that you have to work really hard at your projects, as nobody is going to give you a lot of assistance with them. This applies especially to studio-based work.

I also found that if you're really good, you'll need to help students who are struggling. Lecturers don't like if there are a couple of good students and the rest are falling behind. They want to see good quality of work from everybody, or else they will start ranting on about how miserable our lives will be in the future and how we're not going to get good jobs.

If you take this advice on board, you'll probably have the most relaxed and enjoyable four years of your entire life ;)

For me the best part is getting to mess about and make models. I had not done art or the like since primrary school. The closest I had was junior cert woodwork and at first I didnt know how I would get on since we also have people in our course with a huge background in art. I found that the others in class were great for advice and we all share our skills as best we can ,for example I would be great on computers, which I also love, working on SolidWorks and CAD and the like where others struggle so I will help them. Then when we're in Mountjoy they might give me advice or help on how best to make a model or do a drawing I have in mind.

The lecturerers are great, especially in Bolton Street so thats something else to look forward to.

The best part is when you come up with a killer concept and you get no negative remarks for it. Even better part is that you can use web and graphic design skills to deliver kickass presentations for a really badly written marketing plan or a businesss report and still get a pass grade :D.

im just goin into my first year... whats the story with bolton street and mountjoy square?? what subjects are taught in which building? the whole thing is pretty confusing

The only class really in Mountjoy is Creative Design Fundamentals which is basicly studio work. You will probably have either marketing or economics in Aungier street for the first simester.

Depending on timetables you will have design history in whichever building it suits best. We had one class in Aungier street and another in Bolton Street.

All the rest of your classes are in Bolton Street or across from Bolton Street in Linen Hall which is a small building you will be shown on orientation day.

Now Aungier Street is 20 minutes walking distance from Bolton Street, and Mountjoy Square is approximately 10 minutes from Bolton Street. You don't need to move stuff around much as you can have a locker in Mountjoy, so you can store your tools and materials for studio work.

Well DIT try their best to ensue that you are only in one building a day so you dont have to move around during the day. For us however we did have a morning in Bolton St followed by and afternoon in Aungier Street. We had 3 hours between though so it wasnt that bad.

does anybody know what day were meant to go in? some of my info says induction is the 17th and then i see people saying the 15th so can anyone clear this up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

The 15th is the day all the inductions start as in some will be on each day. I think yours should be the 17th if thats what it says in the letter.

Andy its not that much walking in the end. It will seem like a lot more in the induction day because ou will be doing tours but genereally you are in the same place most of the time. The is just one class in Mountjoy and its one of the first rooms in the door which is handy.

You should all probably familurise yourselves with a shop called K and M Evans just off Caple Street. If you walk down as far as the luas tracks coming from Bolton Street turn right and you will come to a warehouse. Its down the side street at the warehouse, beside the school of English.

You can get some good art supplys for a nice price in there and anything not on discount already you can get 10% off if you just ask for a student discount.

    Sup,
Looking forward to starting 1st year product design. Anybody else trekking from Greystones?
Anybody know how many hours we have a week?
    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭experiMental

    First year:
-first and second semesters: 24 hours a week of lectures + another 10 or more hours of project/continuous assessment work.

Loads of people will be trekking from Greystones, and you can't escape this invasion, you'll just have to get on with them. :D

When do we get our timetables?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

    http://www.dit.ie/services/registration/timetables/

Theres the link to timetables section of the website.

Bear in mind that they tend to change around a bit for the first week or two so dont take this for definate and dont make any plans around it yet.

Well, on the timetable thing it says it starts at 9 30 but i don't know if thats for just engineering students or us aswell. Bit confusing. Perhaps 11 30?
Do we go in on thursday and friday aswell?

Which dart station is closer to bolton btw? Tara or connolly?

As far as I remember its go in at 9.30. There will be tables set up in the college where you sign in. You have to find the product design table. Then after that we went into a room with all enginereing students as well and were given a speech by the head of department and the SU and a few other people before we got our introduction to product design in another smaller room.
