Most programs, especially if they were installed in the "Program Files" folder, will have to be uninstalled, then reinstalled on your external hard drive. You will need the external hard drive connected to run any software installed on it.

There are free antivirus software options available, I personally use avast, and highly recommend it. Download any of the free ones (if you don't want to pay for one), and install it, preferably directly on your laptop. The AVGfree recently went through an upgrade to v8 (I think), so any previous versions are unsupported through updates. I tried it out, but didn't like it, so switched to avast.

Unless you're really stuck for space, and NEED to install software on a secondary hard drive, a good solution is to do a fresh install of XP, and only install programs/software you regularly use, on the laptop hard drive, and use the external for music, documents, archives, backups. If there are lots of unused programs/software on the laptop, then getting rid of them (or not reinstalling them with a fresh OS) will free up space, and probably make the laptop run faster, at least until you begin filling it up again.

Aye, as mentioned you'll can't just cut and paste your programs you'll have to do a fresh install. :)

Leave the programs on the laptop but move any file like videos, music, pictures to the external.
