I'm happy obviously, but does anyone here put their vintage cars through the NCT voluntarily after the car has gone over 30 years of age?

I tried and was told NO,as there was no need for it to be tested.

Glad you're happy, Henry. My 1985 MR2 failed this morning on handbrake imbalance - 70% which, in fairness, is pretty bad. I have renewed everything in the brake dept. except the handbrake cables so I'm hoping it's one of those. Anyway, well done.

No need yes because it's a vintage car and exempt, but NCT told me earlier I could put it through the test voluntarily anytime.

Its no problem to put a vintage car through the nct,I've done to obtain a certificate of roadwortiness for insurance purposes,

All the vintage limos and wedding cars have to be NCT'ed if used for hire or reward.

Hope the upcoming early budget does not have bad news for all you 'nearly there' guys. There was a mention here a good few months ago (reliable source apparently) that changes are coming to the rules. It could be a cut-off date like they have in the UK - something like only vehicles registered before a fixed date (could be thirty years prior to the date of announcement) will qualify - abolition of the thirty year old rule. Let's hope not!

    ggreat topic lads,

    my two cent worth.:)

no matter what rule or law is in place today, having a valid nct on the windscreen will aid you in the event of a crash.

according to my insurance company i do not need an NCT for my 1986 manta gt/e. my insurance company just need an engineers report. i have an engineers report.

according to NCT themselves, yes i do need an nct. (which is correct)

so what i did was i registered it for an NCT, (the car was imported from england) passed that and then i sent a copy of the NCT cert to my insurance company anyway.

you can never be too safe when you own and drive an old car on the road today. Even if you are not to blame in the event of a crash, the opposing insurance company will try anything in their power to blame you.
ah i can just hear them now "the car had old defective brakes with no ABS whereas my clients car had good brakes with ABS". In this situation with no NCT you cannot prove parts are in a good working state.

so my point is - get a volantry NCT, be done with it and then you have an extra piece of mind!

................I agree.................I dont have mine NCT'd but for €50 its a cheap way to find out how good / safe your car is !

Just because a car passes its NCT on a given day doesn't mean it will remain roadworthy for the next two years. We all need to be responsible for the ongoing condition of our cars and their maintenance. This is especially true for Classics that aren't used regularly. All too easy to jump in a car you haven't used for 6 months and find the brakes no longer work as they should!

Congrats HF! It sure is a milestone to officially bring a car into classicdom by passing the last NCT test :)

This NCT lark has me worried about my 86 Golf. I've rebuilt the engine, have just bought a Koni sports suspension and am about to overhaul the brakes... what else should I be worried about?

I've never put a car through an NCT before... I have the luxury of having a company car and letting other people pick up the bill

Not burning a drop of oil thankfully

Steering components, tyres, lights and oil leaks. You probably have everything else covered. Also after doing the suspension and brakes I would put up a good few hundred miles to let the brakes bed in and to work out any other small issues !

    Good luck !

Hmm the only thing there that I won't be overhauling is the steering. Lights are all fine, gonna have the headlight beam set and I have tyres coming from eiretyres. Replaced the rocker gasket and sump gasket and had a new oil pump so no leaks.

Anyway I'm dragging this thread way off topic, sorry Henry
