Apart from fuel and supermarket food, anyone agree that the cost of living good is going down somewhat?

Recently I bought 100 euro worth of good clothes that last year was easily 180-200 by my reckoning. Sh1t I know of one store which was selling international soccer jerseys for under half the regular price (was amazed in Holland that the cheapest Dutch national jerseys to be found were 35, when I could buy them here for 18!). I know places would have unsold stock post Euro 08 but this is the cheapest I ever saw.

Fast food joints seem to be pushing more get one free and eurosaver offers.

Houses are becoming more affordable to Joe Public.

The only thing left to knock down its prices are pubs and clubs. Or has anyone known of anywhere pushing these down too?

A sense of community. That and watching the you-really-must-own-your-own-house brigade complain about their property prices.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

rule of thumb that a recession occurs when real gross domestic product (GDP) growth is negative for two or more consecutive quarters. From Wikipedia...

and considering Q4 2007 had 3.5% growth, and Q1 2008 had 1.5% growth, so i will say again

WE ARE NOT IN A RECESSION

but due to rags such as the Indo we are fast talking our way into ensuring one hits soon...

Recession is great. The main things to thrive or at least stay constant during a recession are drinking and gambling.

Your using old stats to measure it, 6 months out of date. How do you know we are not in a recession right now?
We only know for 100% certain when the CSO releases the stats next year(April maybe).
All the indicators of the economy so far say yes, we are in a recession.

I have to say, this is one thing that has confused me too. I always thought a recession was as defined above. Not just slower than normal (ie in the last 10-15 years) growth

Until CSO figures are released we won't know. But the tactics the rags are using to sell their papers is disgusting.

RAG: Hey everyone, Ireland's in the midst of a recession. Time to tighten up your belts.

PUBLIC: Oh ****, a recession. We better stop spending.

    *6 months later, we're in a recession*

RAG: See, we told ya it was a recession.

PEOPLE WITH A CLUE: Self fulfilling prophecy - lol

Maybe people have too much debt to pay back, has that not crossed your mind?

Workforce has been reduced year on year from key sectors like the service& manufacturing sectors(not just construction), unemployment rising, retail sales have substantially reduced since before xmas, all this started before the papers screamed recession.

All the above leading to less revenue for the govt, thats the indicators.

growth is predicted to be at 0.3% for Q2, so that means we cannot be in a recession until Q1 2009 at the earliest, as it would require Q3 and Q4 to experience negative growth - then we are in a recession...

It went negative from Q4 '07 to Q1 '08. We'll have to wait for Q2 '08 to know for sure unless they released the stat?

Do you agree that the indicators so far are pointing us to the R word?

For anyone who's thinking "this isn't so bad.. what's all the bloody fuss about?" Let me tell you: this is only the start. Things are going to get A LOT worse before they get better. There's a storm comin' so batten down the hatches, stock up on bags of rice, DIY supplies, etc.

edit - apologies guys, meant to post this in weather forum :pac:

    No it didnt - Q4 2007 had 3.5% growth, and Q1 2008 had 1.5% growth!!

Growth is slowing I'll admit that but it hasn't gone negative as there is still growth which doesn't indicate a recession just a stagnating economy! until there is negative growth quarter on quarter for 2 successive quarters we are not in a recession. so if Q3 2008 comes out as -% growth then i will say we are entering a recession but until i see those figures then no...

Exactly, growth went down to minus territory from one quarter to the next.

Its call negative growth now, why don't you just say it 'fell or contracted? :D

Yes, for one quarter to the next. As Prince had stated, the following quarter was supposed to have had small growth(haven't seen that stat yet) and we have to wait for Q3 to come out in 6 months time to know whats going on now.
From Q4 straight to Q2 '08 using Prince's stat doesn't indicate a recession yet, it shows it fluctuating up and down quarter to quarter.
but the economy is still growing therefore its not a recession it doesnt matter if the rate of growth goes up or down...

Yes, its was what you said about the phrase 'negative growth' for the quarter on quarter result that was the funny part :)

What we know without the CSO stats being available until April '09 is that the leading indicators of the economy right now indicate a recession is happening.

ok i get it now :o but the reason i was using negative growth is i thought it was the easiest way to explain it!!
