Playing HE without a HUD?

For the last year or so, I've more or less always played cash hold'em with a HUD. Thought it was pretty standard and that everybody did it. But after reading this thread

    http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php?t=286574

it got me thinking that maybe they're more of a hindrence than a help. Obviously this guy's quite good and seems to be doing well without one. I never use them playing Omaha, and that's by far by top game. So for the last couple of days I've been playing my HE without HUD.

Anybody else do this out of choice?

interesting thread, i'm surprised you took playing w/o a hud as the main thing to take on board/mention from that thread.

I took 100 things from it. Just the hud thing I wanted to get opinions on.

Now that you've stopped using a HUD how long do you think it'll take to get too NL 600 A week or so?

That thread is an eyeopener for a beginner like me, resonates like a big bell on the basic state of mind stuff,

best advice in it IMO is to play only when you want to, have the urge to.

Must be off now to read everything on two plus two, my graph is like a failed erection:o

I would not take this as a cue to stop using a HUD. You need sick levels of concentration and focus to do this on greater than like 2 tables. What would be of more benefit is taking the other stuff he talks about to heart. You could also try sessions without a HUD to make sure that you don't automatically go into braindead mode. I do this myself sparingly to make myself think more.

Yes. Playing holdem with a HUD was making me go into braindead mode. This is the problem I've solved by not using one.

Don't be silly. I'm hoping I'll crack it in 2 months.

Did I miss something from Tight Ted that has lead to him being quasi-ridiculed and considered a level seemingly all the time?

lol yeah he made some comment about boards being rubbish and he saves all his good posts for 2+2 or something. Hes been getting ridiculed ever since. :)

edit - this is the thread :D

and we still haven't gotten a link to the 2+2 posts.

To be fair to ted, it wasn't just that thread.

I'm not looking for a character reference. Let's get the thread back on track.

I created this thread for serious poker discussion. If you want to have off topic banter, you can take it to BBV.

Dont care, a question was asked, i answered it, end of. You're not a mod so :P

I think its not optimal to not use a hud because why wouldnt you want whatever advantages you can get. What TG suggested makes sense though just so you dont go into complete robot mode but i just use it pretty much permanently.

That boywonder thread is amazing. I know Tight Ted is one of the most ridiculed posters here, but all credit for bringing this our attention. I really enjoyed that thread.

HUD's give you info on players, anyone who chooses to have less info on players does so only because they are incapable of properly integrating that info and using it correctly or are playing at such high stakes with few regulars that they know the players very well. I just scanned through the 2+2 thread, it is pretty much everyone leveling the OP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 857 ✭✭✭thedini

didn't think they were levelling him tbh, must of the replies in the thread were from posters with not that many posts

Yeah, its funny how almost everything anyone says gets totally misinterpreted. I've had a few beginners tell me recently they don't use software because it is distracting having read somewhere that xxx famous player plays without them. The only reason not to use it is if you are at such a high skill level that you would already be mostly aware of all the information, or you are playing players who are so good they can play different styles and past stats are meaningless. Of course if you are tight ted then both are true.

I was forced to play without a hud recently because the new pokertracker doesn't support b2b/boss yet and I found I started playing my more natural style and did things I wouldn't have done using a hud which worked well, but at the same time there would definitely be a lot of spots where I made a "mistake" because I didn't have a hud, especially not know how often someone folds to 3-bets which is a hugely important stat.

I think there are players who allow the hud to take over their decision making process a little too much, especially when it comes to game flow but if you're a high volume multi-tabler then game flow isn't easy to monitor with or without a hud. I'm actually completely against the existence of huds. They are bad for online poker but of course I still use them because they are available. I think if they weren't medium stakes would be easier.

I think though it's good practice to sometimes play a long session without a hud and try new things to stop your game going stale.

I have only started using a HUD to play cash and found it seriously helped my play. As Nicky said the information on them folding to a 3-bet was valuable as was other information.
And now I finally know what you guys are talking about when you stick a string of numbers up when saying the guy plays.. :D

    I've got some weak hud....http://www.holdemindicator.com/

I'd say pokertracker would be better.

And that lad said something like "it told me he would fold to a 3-bet" taking all the fun out of playing? Was that poker tracker he was on about?

I've been playing on Cake for the past few months and PT/HUD are not compatible.
Defenitely more enjoyable IMO and it keeps all the multitabling rakeback nits away
TBH, I would love if more sites would do this, although the lack of PT for game analysis is a major annoyance.

I would always use HUD on sites where it is available though....I think you are putting your self at a disadvantage against people who do use it.

Out of interest, what sort of % of players do people think actually use a HUD online these days?

Less than 20% imo due to the number of people playing at any one time.

Depends on the site and level. I'd say 1/2+ on Full Tilt is probably >80%
