Gran Canaria for an October break?

Been looking online, and Gran Canaria sounds great! I've decided I'm might try and visit for a week in easter with my partner. ... to get a break from all the rain and dull weather for a short while at least :)

Only problem is, everywhere I go online they are trying to sell me package holidays to tourist resorts. I would much rather find a nice peaceful beach, and some self-catering accomodation (with not so many loud English tourists everywhere hehe)! I want to try and discover the *real* gran canaria, the locals, and not the obvious resorts or over crowded beaches...

Also, would it be windy there in late October (27th to the 31)?

A compromise would be to stay in Puerto Mogan, about 10 minutes down the road from Puerto Rico. It's only starting to become commercialised now, but is a beautiful small town set around a marina. Nice quiet beach too.

Alternatively you could hire a car and head out to the west coast. There are some nice little villages and you may be able to get a small hotel or a villa perhaps, but most beaches (if not all) are stoney and the sea quite rough. Make sure you spend a day or two in the middle of the island. That (for me anyway) is the real GC. Beautiful valleys overlooked by Roque Nublo and views from Roque across to El Teide on Tenerife. Only thing is, you should be a confident driver, so of the roads have sheer drops and flimsy barriers!

I'm an good driver, but my gf is an incredibly nervous passenger so it could be a white knuckle ride for her!!

Thanks for the info though. So should I just book flights, and accomodation separately? And where is the best place to find a villa or small appartment online? Or could that be arranged on arrival?

    thanks

There are plenty of deals available for October from most tour operators. TBH, you don't save much booking everything directly, however you do have more control over your accommodation by booking it online. www.holidaylettings.co.uk is a pretty safe bet as you deal with the owners directly for each property.

I wouldn't recommend just showing up in GC and then looking for somewhere to stay. I'd say that could be very stressful.
