Anyone know if this story is true?

A mate of mine told me the other day that a Green Party councillor was beaten up following a meeting of Dublin City Council some years ago by Councillors themselves. (he did not mention the year so I dont know how far back it would have been)

It followed corrupt payments of 500 pounds that was made to some of the councillors. Basically he got a cheque too and stood up in the chamber at this meeting waving the cheque and asked 'who else got one of these cheques?'. They then 'beat him up'.

Its not the first time I think I have heard that story and tbh it would not supprise me in the slightest if it was true.

Does anyone recall or remember a story like that? Im just wondering if it is true cause my friend is not one to tell lies or make things up and he told it like it was true - explaining to me just how corrupt the country is. If it is true its shocking but not unexpected.

He wasn't beaten up as such, more put in a headlock. Allegedly!

    It was Trevor Sargent.

    wiki

He is well known for waving in the council chamber a cheque received in the post from a builder who was seeking planning permission for a housing development. When he asked the other members whether any of them had also received cheques, he was assaulted by a number of his fellow councillors. Sargent alleged that Fianna Fáil councillor Don Lydon put him in a headlock and attempted to snatch the cheque from him.[1] This is one of the incidents which eventually led to the creation of planning tribunals to look into planning matters in Dublin County Council.

Fair play Trevor for standing up against corruption. Too bad about the black eye though ;)

I saw Sargent on the panel one night and was impressed with his delivery & concepts, although I feared he was a little naive... This story I have never heard before...but I would love to shake his hand now...

Bet he wouldn't smoke cigars ;-)
