    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if you could point me the right direction.

I only picked up a club for the first time 3 weeks ago but I'm hooked.

I'm heading to the Golfworks sale tomorrow morning and I'm wondering what I should be looking for in complete set.
I'll be looking for steel shafts, with cavity backs & over sized heads.

Are there certain brand names I should prefere, obvoiusly Nike, Callaway or Titleist (spelling) are good but what company would be kind of middle ground.

I picked up Gary McCords Golf for Dummies book so I could learn the lingo before I posted!

I'll have about €300 to spend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Jay.

I started about a year ago myself, got all hot about it in the beginning too :)

Best advice I can give (as a pro of course lol) is to go and buy a cheap set (Ram and Prossimon are ok) from Argos or similar and spend the rest on lessons, it'll be a long time before you get to blame the equipment :P A good glove is vital too.

Sounds like you know the right things to ask for already, you can build a driver, 3 wood and putter onto your collection when you've been playing for a bit, but a starter set of irons should last you a couple of years. When I started playing I got a bag with school bag straps (not sure if that's what it's called) and it self stands and found this meant I could walk through the rough with my clubs (happens a lot at the start), thought it was a great buy

300 isnt a lot to spend to get a decent set of irons if you want to buy new.Although you might find a quality set second hand for that money and they might be better long term than a new set of cheaper irons.

Golf shops always have a good selection of trade ins available.

would recomend going for a decent second hand set as appossed to a crap second hand set that you will be changing six months down the line as you progress . Try the buy and sell it's a buyers market at the moment

If you can try out as many different clubs from friends as you can.

See what suits your eye and 'seem' to work well.

But once you get them dont fall into the trap of thinking the club is the reason you dont play as well as you think.

I've used my daughters pink and really flexible ..and very small driver and hit it straighter and further than the guys I played with and I aint no hot-shot golfer :).

Saying all that I buy plenty of new drivers and Irons..and wedges..but I is most likely a fool.

Wow, thanks for all the advice.

I know €300 is not an awful lot for new clubs but it is a liquidation sale I'm going to so hopefully my euro will stretch that little bit further than usual!

I was over the earlier and they guy told me they have Cobra, Wilson and a few other starter sets.

Should be good to get over and have a look.

I also think a stand bag is a good idea as the last time I was out I had a lend of a set of clubs and I had to lug thebag around the whole time and try to balance it againt things whilst taking my shot, I didn't want to put it on the ground!

I'll post up tomorrow if I get anything.

I was just over in the Golfworks Sale and all they have in regards complete sets are Colt or Bay Hill. The Colt Set ups were a mix or Graphite and steel shafts.
    Graphite Woods and steel irons.

    The Bayhill were all Graphite.

Both sets came with stand bags.

The Colt were €130 (down from €260)

The Bay Hill were €210 (down from €300)

Has anybody heard of either of these brands?

Should I go back and buy them later today or should I go elsewhere and look for a set?

    Regards,

    Jason

Colt are suppose to be good for beginners.

Was there much discount on brand name stuff?

Heatons do a starter set of clubs for €200 and are as good as any colt/ram/bay hill set you could get. you get the woods and bag for that price too. for a beginner its the way to go. you can build a driver, hybrid, putter into your set as you go on

The Brand name stuff was 30% off clubs, 30% off shoes and bags,50% of clothing & accessories.

    Not too shabby.
