    No its just the TV.
Cheap TV = cheap LCD screen + scaler. Bad viewing angles + black levels.

From what little I have looked up, Nordmende are Thompson TVs. Not a top make at all.

Well, I just went into Powercity looked at the available TV/DVD combis and picked the one I liked best without thinking too much about quality... Typical woman, eh..
Anyways, I'm hoping to return it, but they're not obliged to take it back, so i thought i'll exchange it for a better model, and they do have this one and I've read good reviews. Any views on it?

The problem you're having is that this tv seems to have a narrow viewing angle. Meaning that you can only look at it from certain angles before the image becomes distorted. Most televisions will list the viewing angle as part of its specs. You should also always try to see a tv working before purchase and see what the image is like from your expected viewing angles.

yes, thanks, I've come to realise the problem with the viewing angle in the meantime. It appears that no decent brand produces these LCD/DVD combis and the ones available from unknown manufacturers are all more or less of the same specs...
