Few artists in the music business reach the level of accomplishment and status that Kerri Chandler has achieved. He is known throughout the universe as one of the original creators of the deep house sound and his "basslines" are now legendary.
Kerri grew up in the New Jersey area during the days of the infamous Zanzibar club with resident DJ Tony Humpries. Kerri's father was a DJ as well, which gave Kerri a rich background in the origins of the New York Underground Sound (known also as "Garage" music). He made his DJ debut at the Rally Record Club in East Orange, New Jersey at the tender age of Thirteen.
Kerri eventually found himself intrigued with the production element in dance music and soon began to create his own grooves on his one man label, Express Records. In 1991, Atlantic Records signed his debut single, "SuperLover / Get It Off" and the rest is House Music History. Despite his success, Kerri Chandler has always remained true to the spirit of the underground. When listening to tracks such as the "Atmosphere E.P." on Shelter Records and the seminal, "A Basement, Redlight and A Feeling" album on Madhouse, one has to marvel at Kerri's ability to not compromise his unique sound for commercial gain.
Kerri Chandler is a vortex where tradition and innovation meet. Tradition as in the soulful roots of Jersey house, innovation as in the streamlined, sparse arrangements and shrewd use of technology. Kerri masters rhythm and space.
Kerri injects his free spirit into his productions. With a solid education in Garage grooves, Kerri takes vocals, rhythms and instruments and with uncanny precision pieces them together, delivering beautiful, monster jams. In the expanses of his breaks the odd counter rhythm will inexplicably appear for a second and then disappear, creating fleshy excitement, not mechanical repetition. His basslines go from heavy and heady to playful and quirky -always deliriously intoxicating. His hooks are loving details like horn hits, washes of synthesizer or catchy choruses that emerge to create songs from a maddening bulldozer of brutal drive. Here the dreamer takes hold, transporting us into a dimension of seemingly endless travel...
Kerri is sure to continue to startle us as he has from the very beginning as with his first remix, the now-classic scratch on "Get It Off". His fusions, clamped to the beat of his unique, thundering kick drum, redefine house music at every turn.

Kerri Chandler interview in The Event Guide:

    The Reel Deal

The Event Guide talks to East Orange DJ Kerri Chandler in advance of his Tivoli Theatre appearance.

    Hello Kerri. How are you?
I'm good…just getting some new tracks in order for a new album.

Where are you at the moment?
I have been travelling and in the studio.

    What are you working on?
Track 1 remixes, and basement red light #3.

You have a huge fan base in Ireland. To where and when did you first come over to play here?
Sir Henry's in Cork. I don't recall the year, but it has been amazing ever since. It’s one of my all time favourite places to play.

What do you make of the Irish audience?
I have so many friends (more like family) in Ireland, and they’re always up for it. If I ever needed to feel loved, I return to Ireland.

Have you noticed many changes in Ireland since you first played here?
Just a younger generation coming in to the clubs, and they’re just as energetic…if not more so.

You always seem to be up on the latest technology. Is there anything in particular that you are in to at the moment?
I am constantly building gear. I have built two new control surfaces and Hologram Profomances (sic).

How has House music changed since you first started playing out?
The way it is being played from turntables, to CDJs, to computers.

    For better or worse?
Well better because you can bring so much music with you, but worse because sales are in the toilet.

What's is in your box right now?
Honestly, it’s hard for me to keep track because there is so much music, as I said…everything and the kitchen sink.

You come from a very musical background. How many musicians are in your family?
Twelve at least. But I’m the crazy one.

Tell us a little about the influence this has had on you?
There were turntables in every room of my grandparent’s house, so I got to hear everything just walking from room to room. My grandparents had eight children, and twenty rooms, so there was a party all of the time somewhere in that house.

You lived in the same house as Dennis Ferrer for a while. Do you still see him much? Have you any plans to work together soon?
Yeah. Dennis moved in to my studio years ago and never left. I will see him tomorrow to go record searching.

You recently did a set playing solely from reel to reel tapes. What preparation had to go in to this?
Oh man, I hadn’t done this since 1993, so I had to make sure the tape machines were up to spec. I had the heads changed and calibrated, I also had to find a new tape supplier and tape editing tools (tape, leader tape, editing blocks, etc). But it was fun. It took me about a month to transfer and edit songs (I did them all by hand and with razor blades…Old School!!). In all, there were about twenty reel-to-reel tapes when I was done.

How many tracks did you transfer over to tape?
There are about seven songs to each reel and I did twenty so about one hundred and forty.

You recently made and album based around computer games. Tell us a bit about that please.
I have always loved programming computer games and playing them so this was like a huge experiment for me. I would tear apart an Atari and make a sound module with it, and make a song. Everyday I would blow the dust of an old game console to make music with it, or hack it to make sound.

What kind of live elements do you include in your sets?
Live band members, I play keyboards, reel to reels, laser synths, virtual setups, vocalist….I build things sometimes just for the club…whatever the club lets me and my imagination get away with honestly. And, like I said before, I'm crazy.

You recently played Electric Picnic. How did it go?
I had a wonderful time seeing Greg, Shane, Stevie, Tracey, Martin, Gavin, Daz, Ray, Davy…I can go on an on and on.

What can we expect from your upcoming set in The Tivoli?
Loads of things I 'm working on, and lots of fun songs.

I Lov It presents Kerri Chandler, with Billy Scurry, Carl Bauer and Matt Faherty, at the Tivoli Theatre, Francis Street, Dublin 8, on Friday 10th October. 10pm – late. €18. YouTube: “Kerri Chandler” / www.myspace.com/kerrichandler / www.tivoli.ie
