Sharing media between 2 home PC's

Ok, I thought I was tech savvy enough to be able to share media between 2 PC's in the same room at home.

    It's driving me nuts!!!

Both are running Vista Home Premium.

I'm able to get it working fine by running the cat 5 cable directly from one PC to the other, but I need the cat 5 cable to connect into the Eircom router, well... for obvious reasons. Should I be setting up some sort of home network of something?

Direct cable link for PC to PC would need to be crossover cable rather than plain cat5 . What is "it" that you can get running fine ?
Your router wont come into the equation if you are directly linking (wiring)two computers . However , if you are trying to connect wirelessly or with both computers wired to the router you need to have both computers in the same workgroup and you need to allow sharing on the folder(s) on each machine - e.g. if you want PC1 to have access to My Documents on PC2 you need to allow sharing of My Documents on PC2 , etc

I seem to have all the sharing sorted. I got it to work fine when I had the them plugged into each other directly with the Cat 5 cable, but that isn't really practical as I need to have them connected to the net, which I am doing so through Cat 5 cables into my Eircom router.

You mentioned a Workgroup, but I'm not really sure how to set one up.

    EDIT: I'm google-ing it now...

no need for a workgroup, just connect both pc's to the router.

right click the folder you want to share and and select properties / sharing

once shared go to the other pc and go to start and run and type

"\\ipaddress" without quotes where ipaddress is the address of the pc you
you want to get the files from you could also use "\\computer name"

works fine for me like this to access my dads pc connected to the eircom router with a cable and me wirelessly. your fire wall might pop up a notification by you say the pc's are in the same place so you'll see it
and be able to allow an incomming connection.

There are loads of other ways to do this but this will work fine for what you need to do. If its a once off share just dont leave the folders shared out.
