Paying rent in cash.

We pay our rent monthly and our landlord calls every month to the house to collect it in person. This is a real pain in the ass what with having to go to the bank to get the cash, wait for him to call and then the whole counting of money. We suggested paying by direct debit but he said it's handier for him as he's in the area at the same time every month. Can we insist on paying by direct debit? Is he trying to hide something from the taxman?

    Do you claim rent relief?

Ask him for his PPS number and say you want it to claim rent relief.
He'll get flustered, defensive and angry and then refuse to give it.

Tell him that this is costing you money, over 300euro per year. He'll give you the money off.

Then report him to the Revenue anyway and claim your rent relief.
    Everyone wins :)

It could be that he likes to keep an eye on the property to make sure its being well kept. Collecting the rent could very well be a pretext for this.

The landlords PPS number is not a requirement for rent relief, only the address. Revenue can then find out who the owner is and check that they are being tax compliant.

I dont think you can insist on anything except a receipt. If he wants cash, then cash he shall get.

He gave us his PPS details and address so we can claim rent relief. Haven't actually gotten round to doing it just yet. Must get up off my ass and do it.

In terms of checking out the house, he or his wife literally come to the door, take the cash and go. The odd time they'd come in but they don't go looking around the house. It just seems odd in this day and age that they don't do standing orders. They have to travel a good 20 miles everytime they want the cash and if one of us isn't here, they've to make the same trip a few days later.

My friend’s landlord does the same thing. It such a pain and even though he did get her to fill out forms for the ptrb I think in some way he must be dodging the tax man by not having an account trail.

She got fed up with having to wait in for him and him being in her flat that she started to say she wouldn’t be in when he wanted to collect the money and now she puts the rent under the door of the next house (where he lives), sends him a text when she does it and he drops a receipt in her letterbox.
