    Hi folks,

I recently moved to Santry and was wondering if there is a good spot for running when it gets dark in Dublin near Santry ideally? Looking for somewhere well lit, safe, few/no kerbs, etc.
Everywhere seems to be dark/unsafe. What's the deal with Clonliffe Harriers and the Morton Stadium? I'd prefer to have my own timetable so maybe joining a club woudn't be my best option...

    Thanks,
    John.

I live next to Morton stadium. Its grand to run in as long as you are doing proper track sets and are respectful of others.

With regards running there are a few options. Out the old airport road. You can get a good two hour safe lit run that way. (hour out, hour back). Boring as can be route wise though.

Other option is down through Coolock, down to the sea and then around and back up through drumcondra ish. Again about two hours.

Shorter routes - obviously out and back on the old airport road does as much as you want. Another nice one, relevatively speaking, is down towards DCU and a lap, hang a right onto collins avenue, then down ballymun road towards phipsboro(?) then left onto griffit(what is wrong with my spelling) avenue and back up to santry. Maybe 40 minutes there.

There are good few safe runs around.

ALSAA out near Dublin Airport have a running track. If you have a bicycle/car, you could head down to Clontarf sea front and run along the grass boulevard there. It's lit up at night.

    Thanks for the responses folks!

I reckon I might prefer the seafront run as it'd be more dedicated to running rather than having to cross roads/junctions, etc.
Is the seafront lit up well or just dimly?
How long is it from one end to the other?

Think I might give it a go this week...

It's 1.7 miles from one end to the other. It's lit up well enough, I've never felt unsafe running there anyway. Usually plenty of other people out walking and jogging as well. Not like the Phoenix Park where I feel quite dodgy running at night.

its a little short the sea front, actually its very short.

Junctions are few and far between on the old airport run. It is good running and its right beside your house so its more time effective.

I'm not sure if you've ever joined an athletic club but there is massive flexibility and no obligation to join up for training. If you join a club like Clonliffe you will have access to the track, gym and one of the best collections of running brains in Ireland through the coaches and athletes who will always be willing to help and encourage. There is a year long Club Grand Prix series run by the club which involves everything from 1500 on track to road and cross-country races and is suitable for the recreational runner or hardened road runner. There are many training groups who train on track/road/country at various times and again you would only have to join up for sessions when it suits. The standards of the groups vary from recreational to elite and the best distance runners in Ireland (Clonliffe have won the national cross-country 5 years in a row:cool:) so all levels are welcome - you could end up sharing a warmup with one the the 50 year old master athletes or even olympian Alistair Cragg. There will be access to the best coaches in the country too all inclusive in your yearly sub of €140 (reduction on first year). Meeting road running groups will get rid of the problem of running and feeling unsafe as you'll be in a pack and more importantly your running will come on a bomb. Worth a thought, if you go for it you won't regret it and no obligation to commit to times etc as you would only turn up when it suits you. Check out the About Us section.
    Ireland's top club

Its possible to run under lights too in ALSAA when the ball sports teams are training in the back fields.

    Hey
Live in the area also, vary my routes between
a long one - artane, howth road, through Raheny and down to causeway and along sea front and back via griffith avenue etc
shorter 10k or so - collins avenue, malahide road, griffith avenue, ballymun road and back collins avenue

although the shorter run crosses the busy airport road twice its not crossing many busy roads
