As most people know, they only way to acquire hd television as of yet, is with Sky HD, and if you have a hd set obviously. When will programmes be shown in hd for those who haven't subscribed for this package, i.e are with NTL or just have the standard RTE channels and tv3 and TG4?

There will probably be a HD channel when DTT (Freeview) goes nationwide.

Question: In the long (long) run, will HD become the standard?

Freeview is the UK DTT. What we will have is not going to be called Freeview. It will be mostly subscription.

we are getting our version of freeview in ireland.. it will be digital tv unlike analog like it is now... you can pick up it in dublin if you have a freeview box..

RTE is around 7 years behind the UK.. 7 years after with widescreen 7 years with digital and prob 7 years late with HD...

at the mo id say 20% of programing is HD so the chanel wouldent be able to work most of the time.... if we wnt hd in the morning...

We will indeed be getting a DTT service but it's not going to be like Freeview. Your Freeview box will only pick up a signal now if it is MPEG4 compatible. 99% aren't.
