Bit of an unusual request, but does anyone know of any computer programs which would take the beeps from a stylophone and turn them into a similar-pitched piano or guitar sound?

I'm not worried about recording the noise or anything, but I just thought it would be good craic and not impossible to do.

I guess you could probably modify one to make it work with Midi but that would be a pain in the arse.

There's software that can recognise pitch and generate MIDI from it, which you could then use to control a piano or guitar sample set. A stylophone produces pretty simple waveforms so I imagine it would be quite effective, though I don't know the whole thing could be done in realtime. And I can't remember the names of any of the software, so you'll have to go googling. :pac:

Check out MetaSynth 4. You can get a demo version for Mac but not sure if there is a PC version. I'd be surprised if there wasn't. You can make your own sounds with it and as Eoin has said the stylophone had a very simple sound which I am sure you could generate by just messing about.

Think the OP is basically trying to use a stylophone as a MIDI controller. :)

Ah yes, re read and understood now. Seems rather strange but there ya go!

    I think so too :P

The main thing would be that it would work in realtime, but would that depend on the speed of my computer?

I'll go a-googling for it anyway.

Edit: Found one that can change a recorded file, but thats not much use.

This device does what you want for a guitar: http://www.thomann.de/ie/terratec_axon_ax_50_usb.htm
I'd start my search there and see if you can find one that will work for a pad instrument like the stylophone.

I would not be terribly optimistic about getting a computer to do it reliably in realtime. Even if you can get the MIDI generation to a few milliseconds, a sample set will just add more time to it.
