How much would ethical issues affect your ability to do your job?

Something came up in work last week where my ethics were challenged. I had to deal with a customer that thought had a dodgy background. Fortunately it transpired that my concerns were incorrect.

But it got me thinking. how do ethics effect how you do your job? Id imagine most of us would not work for a company that say for example dumped their waste into the local river.

However what if it was one of your customers or suppliers taking part in unethical practises? Anything from exploitation of children in sweat shops, building nuclear weapsons, drumping toxic waste into the ocean etc etc. Is it something you think about or care about?

Getting back to my scenario, if my suspicions had have been correct, i know have had serious trouble continuing to deal with that customer and thus jeopardised the business.

For the purpose of this thread, can we try avoid getting bogged down in a debate about animals testings for the purpose of medicines etc as there is already a very detailed thread for a very complex issue in hunanities. (So if you want to talk about whats right and wrong when its comes to animal testing please do it there!)

Dont want to start the whole animal testing thing here but just saying that People have left the company I work for over ethical issues, it was relating to animal testing (medical devices), I only found it weird they were not aware of this from the start of their employment:confused:. Now we ask any new employee if they have any issues with this before signing a contract.

I try not to think about it. But yes, some of my customers may be doing things that I don't agree with ethically. I can't really go into any detail though, I'd like to keep my job! :p

I'm working on a big project which is largely state-funded. A purchaser here is dating one of her suppliers. I think its waay out of order.

I sold Turkish and Bulgarian property to hapless Irish thrillseekers.

    I have no ethics.
