Starting science next month :D What subjects is everyone gonna do? The big list of options is kinda confusing! Still undecided

hey! i think im gonna do maths methods, biology1+2, geography, geology and physics foundation!...not doing chemistry restricts me a good bit regarding what i can major in but im not too fond of it, i didn't do it for the leaving and stress of coming in a week early for that extra course in it!!:D

Unless things have changed in 2 years then biology doesn't split until senior freshman so this year you'd just be doing all round biology. I would seriously also advise you to do chemistry even if you have't done it for the leaving. All my mates who were in that boat passed it grand and did it in SF as well and again had no problems (whereas I, having done it for the leaving, had to repeat it in JF). I know quite a few people who weren't able to get on a course they wanted because they hadn't done chemistry.

This is a broad generalisation but I found people did either

    Physics A
    Maths
    Chemistry

if they were looking to go into one of those for their major or

    Biology
    Chemistry
    Maths methods
    Physics B

if they were looking to go down the biology route.

Of course these aren't set in stone requirements or any thing and many people did a different mix of these but I think they were the two most popular combinations. IMO I wouldn't do geography/geology unless you wanted to do either of them for your major because I feel you get more options the with the others but that's just me personally.

Anyway you'll have meetings with different profs at the beginning (Freshers week IIRC) where you will briefly discuss your subject choices.

Yeah I think it has changed a bit because there's biology 101 and 102 and chemisty 101 and 102 in first year now! Think I'm gonna try maths methods, biology, chemisty and geology. :)

I have posted this spiel before but for general info ill put it up again

JF Science has indeed changed to accommidate the Bolonga Agreement from this year the structure is:

you will have to take 6 modules a year

Maths remains as is and is worth 2 modules (you must take both)

Maths methods is worth 1 module

Chemistry is being split into Chem A and Chem B at 1 module each (you must be taking A to take B, and both a and b are going to be required for later years as is happening now)

Physics is worth 2 modules while the foundation Physics is worth 1 module

Biology is now Bio 1 and Bio 2 at 1 module each

Geography and Geology will now be worth 1 module each.

Basically means anyone doing maths methods dosent have to do another 3 full subjects anymore

But be very careful when picking subjects as the requirements for later years are staying as is (e.g for 3rd year Biochem you will need both Chem A and Chem B from 1st year)

Oh and as it is my job I recommend everyone do Chemistry, its great.............................(really it is):)

Man I'm too young to be saying 'Back in my day . . . ' I'm only in SS :D I suppose this is a better system gives people more choice although I suspect a lot of people will do both biologies if they do one etc.

Yeah I think i've decided what subjects i'm going to do...

Im not doing full maths or full physics because that would be 40 credits gone already...

So I think i'll go with

    1.Maths Methods
2.Foundation Physics(Did'nt do Physics for the Leabing)
    3.Chemistry 101
    4.Chemistry 102
    5.Biology 101
    6.Geography

I want to do something in biochemistry so these should do me fine...

I think the new flexibility in the courses presents an interesting dilemna - have a very broad freshmen science experience and risk spreading yourself too thin or just keep to the subjects you're interested in.

I did Biology, chemistry, maths, geology in first year and second year a few years ago (5/6). To the people like the person above, if you're sure you're going down a specific route - Biochemistry or Neuroscience etc. I'd recommend you do both Biology and both Chemistry courses with maths. Granted the courses in Bio B or Bio 2 aren't directly relevant but I think they'll stand to you more than a little bit of physics and a little bit of geology.

Do you have to do MAths or Maths methods? Can you avoid both?

Was just reading this on Trinity's website in relation to subjects you can pick for second year - ''Biology I; Biology II or Mathematics; Chemistry; Geography or Physics; Geology''.

Can anyone tell me why it's Geography or Physics? Am planning to do Science in TCD (next year) and would like to do both Geog and Phys, there's be no way I could do both then?

I'm not sure about whether you have to do a maths subject I think you do basically there is three basic module options available to you and I think maths is a part of each one...

I really dont like biology 101 it's ecology and evolution and all that and I was much more interested in the cellular and chemical side of things when I did it for the leaving cert if I do decide to do both biology's I would ditvh physics...i'm still not 100% yet...

Yeah you can avoid maths altogether now I think! The subjects you do then are chemistry 101 and 102, biology 101 and 102, geography and geology.Do you need maths for most degrees?

I think you need maths for a maths or physics degree thats it...unless i'm wrong its the booklet though..

Just reading the booklet now...I think you have to do maths or maths methods in first year for every degree except botany, environmental science, geography and geology. Maths it is then!!

Ecology and evolution were my favourite courses so I see we have different tastes. If I was going back I'd do

    Maths 1 and 2
    Biology 1 and 2
    Chemistry 1 and 2

Can you still take up geology in SF without doing it in JF and drop Chem? I don't know why I'm still interested in this. Is that science booklet anywhere to download?
