Hard Drive Issue

    Hello All,

I have a SATA HD where the controller card on the back of the HD started to fry.

Lots of info on the disk and really want to get it back.

Seagate have told me that to fix it all the info will be erased and to get the info retrieved will probably cost a good bit.

If i bought the exact same model HD will be able to just swap the card on the back with the other HD and get it working or not?

    Any advice would be welcome.

You would have to get a disk with the same or very close to it product code on the board, sure it should be possible but google is your friend!

Thanks, was googling but can't find much on it.

What is the card on the back of the hd called? when i put in controller card it brings up results for separate controllers cards.

    Any advice?

Not only does it need to be the same drive, but also the exact same firmware version. You'll need to be fully sure of this

Ok, how do i make sure the firmware is the same?

Will the firmware version be displayed on the label of the disk?

If all is right and the disks are a match. Is it easy to replace the board on it?

Could be but I'd doubt it, the firmware is the version of the software on the hard drives circuitry. I'd say different firmwares could have a slight difference in serial number (like series number or letter etc) or some other indicating mark.

There are companies that specialise in this sort of thing. They charge huge money and claim to work in a special environment so as not to damage your hard drive through static (although I'm doubting this). This is how they recover the data.
