Airport Extreme

    Hi all,

Sorry if this question has been answered before, but its doing my head in.
I cannot get my Xbox 360 to connect to my Airport Extreme, I've read online that there was issues with this when the Extreme came out originally but it has since been updated.
I've tried to connect wirelessly and with a LAN cable, the Airport can "see" the 360 but can't connect to it?

Has anyone had this problem?. And if so any solutions.?
    Cheers
    Bob

Are you sure all the settings are correct on the 360 side? Also what security are using on the AEBS? WEP?

Yeah I think its all ok on the 360 side. I'm using a wpa password on the base station.

And when you run the connection test on the 360 where is it failing?

    Stopping at the Wireless connection.

I have similar problems - the adapter fails to ever get an IP, ending up with an invalid 0.0.0.0 address instead. However, if I hardwire the Xbox to the Airport Extreme, it works right away. I've also tried the Xbox out with a spare Linksys router I have lying around and it does the same thing, so I'm pretty sure that the Xbox wireless adapter is borked and I plan on replacing it with an Airport Express soon (you can wire the Xbox to the Express, then put the Express into bridge mode and wirelessly connect it to the Extreme). I should've done that first, cause the Xbox Wi-Fi adapter seems to be a piece of crap...

Im starting to lean towards that way of thinking too mate. When you wired the xbox to the airport did you just stick to automatic settings from the xbox?

Yep, everything set to automatic - it grabs a valid IP over DHCP and no issues at all. I only have problems with the wireless adapter. Can't remember exactly what the option is called on the Xbox, but can't you reset all the network settings? So unplug the wireless adapter, reset settings, plug in the ethernet cable and try again? It just seems really odd that wired doesn't work either for you.

I dunno, im by no means an technophile but god damn. I just tried the Lan cable and it ( the 360) jammed up at the IP stage.

Very weird, I might try calling NTL ( my broadband provider) and see if they know anything.
Couldn't be as bad as MS's webpage which just give you the generic bulls**t answers that don't solve anything.

    Thanks for your replies

Try setting it up to use a manual/fixed ip instead of DHCP. That's how mine is set up (I've an old Extreme station mind you) and I've never had any problems.

Also maybe try a different wireless security on your AEBS, like WEP.

Very weird, I might try calling NTL ( my broadband provider) and see if they know anything.

I'm with NTL/UPC too - it won't be something on their end because the Airport Extreme is assigning IPs to everything on you network and if you are using default settings, your ranges will be 10.0.1.xxx which differs from your external IP which is assigned by NTL. My point is that the Xbox should get an IP from the Airport even if you were not connected to the Internet.

It's probably going to be better to try to get the wired connection working since you won't have to worry about wireless security or any other Wi-Fi settings.

The only other thing I can think of is that something is messing with he DHCP assignment of IPs - but this would screw up your Mac/PCs as well. You could try Sad Professor's suggestion of assigning a manual IP but in my case, that didn't work - at least for the wireless side that I'm having issues with.

What modem do you have from NTL? Could it be doing any routing of its' own? If two devices on the same network are assigning IPs via DHCP, that messes things up but as I mentioned above, it would not be limited to the Xbox but would affect your entire network...

Your wireless problems could very well be down to the crappy Xbox adapter, but the wired problems are what have me stumped...

Lads thanks a mil for your replies, finally got this bulls**t working. Basically involved deleting absolutely everything off my my Imac to do with Airport (no easy feat) and resetting everything on the xbox.

Cool. Glad you got it working, though I don't get why you had to mess with the Airport setup on your iMac but hey, if it works that's all that matters :).
