Following on from looking at a new tv I'm looking at the DVR option.

I have UPC, and am considering the €5 per month for the DVR. Before I sign up, I'd like to know my options. Do I have to use this or can I buy a DVR on the market instead of renting from UPC...?

You can buy one but the UPC one will give better quality and have the UPC guide built in. I wouldn't think it is worth getting an external one.

Unless you plan on spending a lot of time and money building a PC based MythTV or Windows Media Center set up, then I go with the UPC DVR as it is far better then any other option.

If you go with your own DVR you will need to set two timers when you need to record, the one on your TV/UPC box as well as the one on your DVR. With the UPC DVR one click does it when you find the program in the media guide. The main issue with it is that there is no series link (as Sky+ has) but this is no different with an external DVR.

Not if you use IrBlaster HW/SW on your homebrew system, since the IRBlaster can emulate your UPC remotecontrol and change channels for you.
Although it is hardly worthwhile, since you are only pulling an analogue feed from the UPC box anyhow and not recording natively in digital.

The homebrew system is not something for the faint of heart, but has the capability to add much more functionality, such as playback of other video formats/sources etc, various plugins (weather, Stocks, YouTube), 2 week epg guide with a good search facility, etc.
