Just try to reset it. Here's how:

    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

    These instructions are from:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320

If it keeps on freezing frequently after that, formatting it, updating the firmware and reloading all music on it may be a good idea.

An MP3 player freezing/locking up is pretty common you know and not something unique to Apple. I've had numerous Creative players in the past and you should see how often they freeze (and most of them have a moronic tiny hole that requires a paper clip through it to reset it, rather than a button combination like iPods do...). If the player was broken, I'd understand your frustration, but this was nothing major (and if it hadn't ever happened before, that's a good thing in itself).

Sorry, knee-jerk reaction from working in tech support years ago (not for Apple though) and having people go mental when the smallest thing would go wrong with their MP3 player :).
