RAW conversion degradation

I have a Canon Eos 450D and have noticed that when I convert from RAW to either TIFF or JPEG (using the Canon software) there is a noticeable degradation in quality.

In the RAW viewer the picture is razorsharp, but when converted it really suffers. I have adjusted all the settings etc in the software to no avail. Any chance someone could try it if they have the software to compare?

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

    Freddie.

The Canon software wouldn't be applying much in the way of sharpening, so that could be one problem, the other is if you're exporting in 8 or 16 bit, and what you're opening it up with afterwards. Quality of Jpeg won't match Tiff or Raw, but Tiff should be grand.

Have you tried the demo's of Photoshop and/or Lightroom?

PM sent and it's not to do with a 450D!

    Thanks for the advice folks.

Fajitas - just to reiterate, the pictures are stunning when viewed in RAW. Great clarity and sharpness. But when they're converted to TIFF the detail just drops. Clarity/sharpness gone. Someone was wearing a jumper with very fine detail on Friday night and it REALLY showed it up.

    Thanks again.

    Freddie.

Could be set to lower quality?

What size are the converted files?

34 Megs in TIFF. There appears to be little, or no, difference in the quality of the files when it's converted to a 34 Meg TIFF or 10 Meg Jpeg. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of the quality images the 450D produces.

Picassa has a decent enough RAW converter, might we worth checking for comparison sake.
