Dial up connection killed after 15 mins

I was called into a friend's house over the weekend to take a look at this dial-up problem. He's with eircom net on a free account thingy and after 15 minutes or so (sometimes more, sometimes less) he get disconnected. The connection is shut down completely, there's no 'eircom will disconnect' countdown or anything and it's definitely not due to inactivity. I removed all 'idle timeouts' and installed a 'keep-alive' program on his machine, but 15 minutes and 8 seconds after dialling in, the connection was completely killed.

I suggested that it was something eircom have on their end. Something interfering with the telephone signal itself, or perhaps eircom have accidentally put a limit on call length to their 1890 connection number? I was just speculating though. If anybody knows of a similar issue involving eircom net, please pass it on, and I'll make sure he contacts the right person to get it fixed.

Has this only started recently or did it always do it? It could be a problem with the phone line. To rule it out, try this: (assuming you're using Windows here)

Open Control Panel then Phone and Modem Options. Click the Modems tab and click Properties for the modem you're using. Now click the Advanced tab and enter the following command into the extra settings box:

    at+ms=v34

Try it with that and see if it remains connected. If so, then the line most likely can't handle higher speeds - this command forces the modem to 33.6k. If you get an error, remove the command - not all modems can take it.

    Is it a stargate?

It's not an Outlook Express 'hang up after sending and receiving' issue is it?

I was just about to post on this very issue so I may as well ask here too.

My BB went down this evening so I decided to use a dialup connection to post the problem on my BB providers forum.

Low & behold! every time I dialed & connected (On eircom) it allowed me to surf for about 6-7 Mins but then disconnected. I tried it quite a few times but it disconnected me every time.

I then created a dialup connection to Oceanfree (it actually still works ;-))
but it too disconnected everytime within minutes.

All the dialup settings such as disconnect after x amount of minuets are unchecked as is "Disconnect in connection is no longer needed".

What else could be causing it? (BB back so using it for this post).

Actually my dads old machine still uses dialup but i havent used that in over a year. if i recall correctly it did end up re-dialing every odd 15 minutes or so. I didnt really look too much into it considering I was only on boards.ie so it was never an issue that I was trying to stream something or anything like that.

Maybe Eircom did something to the lines to piss people off to the point of signing on to DL and broadband? Sounds like something an American company would do anyway so why not an Irish one.

In my case, Outlook Express is set to be checked manually. All the auto options are disabled so it's not that.
