I am running Vista on a laptop but have recently had DNS problems

while I appear to be connected to the net - I can only view sites by typing in the ip address

this problem began to emerge when I started using iTunes and downloading podcasts and videos but this may not be relevant

I usually connect on wireless using Belkin wireless G router and have had no problems previously

my home PC is operating fine with no problems ( BT Broadband )

I would much appreciate any help you can offer

    You could try ipconfig /flushdns
You are getting your IP address etc automatically right?
You can try a manual DNS entry, Eircoms DNS servers are crap.

If all else fails you can try resetting tcp/ip.. not sure if things have changed sicne XP but from a command window (start-run-cmd)
at a c:\ prompt then type
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.xt

reboot. This rebuilds the tcp/ip stack

    just add dns settings
    open dns should work:
    dns1:208.67.222.222
    dns2:208.67.220.220

get to the network settings in control panel->network&sharing center->view status->properties->ipv4

Obviously you are using IE7? Have you tried with firefox or another browser??
If not then give it a go, it could be an internet explorer prolem. Try turning off any add-ons.. actually start it with no add ons. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
    add-ons).

Or if the icon is on your desktop you can just right click it. If it works, either find offending add on and get rid.. or do a reset in internet options/advanced.

maybe disable your firewall as a test, to see if it makes a differance, if it does make a differance you might need change its settings

also powering on/off the bt router if you haven't tried that

Do you have local area conenction or a memory stick? You can download Firefox from the PC and transfer it over.

You can also try resetting the router and deleting the connection profile from the network and sharing center.

To download firefox you will need to go to another computer that has internet access, and go to the firefox website

Insert a memory stick or some other form of portable storage (your ipod may work) and choose to save the firefox installation file to the removable device.

Once that is complete, attach the drive to the computer you are having dns trouble with, and double click on the installtion icon in your drive. No need to copy it to your computer, it will install to your computer anyway.

If the problem is only a very recent problem, you can also try something called System Restore. You can find it at Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system retore (similar for vista I presume). This will roll back your computers' settings to a previously recorded checkpoint. If you choose this option it will not delete any files, but you won't have applications that you installed since the checkpoint. It is easy to use and also undo-able.

Just choose to restore your computer to an earlier time, select from one of the dates in bold when your computer was behaving normally, and click on next / ok / whatever.

It will do a slow shutdown / restart and tell you whether it was performed successfully at the end. Should take 5-10 minutes really.
