Ordering Magazines

Hope this is the correct place for this!

I asked a local shop to order in and keep a copy of the Radio Times for me every week as the nearest shop that does stock it is 20 miles away. Three weeks of calling in and being told that it hadn't come in later, I was told that Eason (the distributor?) won't deliver less than 10 copies of a magazine to a shop and so they wouldn't supply my Radio Times.

    Is this true?

They didn't reply to me so I'm still none the wiser.

Rubbish excuse from the shopkeeper, I feel.

My local newsagent in Dublin only has 3 copies of the Radio Times on sale, but mind you, they are normally all sold by Friday.

A question I might ask is, does your shop have a decent magazine rack? Is it a mini-supermarket or an actual old-style newsagent?

i used to work in a newsagents. Problem is that there is very little profit margin on magazines. Any unsold copies are returned to the wholesaler and are credited. What happens when magazines are being held for people is that it is a lot of work to check the list, file away the magazines etc. for something that the shopkeeper's npot making much on to begin with. The real problem is when the magazine isn't collected, say for example you forget or you're sick. If the shopkeeper doesn't return it on time then she's at the loss of the whole amount. Believe me it's hard to make money running a newsagency and unless you're prepared to pay for an extra service it's not likely you'll get it these days.

I did wonder if the shop was telling porkies but I did want to find out from Eason to be 100% sure. I wouldn't have minded if the shop had just said no straight away and that would be the end of it but having me come back three weeks in a row and them telling me that it hadn't come in when they had no intention of even ordering it for me in the first place is a bit off...

It's a Mace overpriced minimarket, and it has a decent magazine rack (if you're into tractors) for a shop of its size but doesn't stock the RT. They do keep newspapers/magazines under the counter for people which is why I chose that particular shop.

I'll try somewhere else and see what happens.

    Thanks for your replies.

    :)

    Thanks for clarifying that.

I feel that if the sole focus of a newsagent is selling papers and magazines, they will serve you. Mini-markets like Mace, Spar or Centra have their focus on other things. I do understand that partworks are the bain of shops all round, but a weekly periodical shouldn't be too bad.

Better luck in the next place :)

That's most definetly not true. They'll supply 1 if they thought it would sell. More often than not they'll oversupply but they wont create a supply threshold.
