I watch some clips on the RTE site, but reguarly the RTE Media Player / Real Player crashes IE7. I have seen this on several PCs/Laptops. Is there any fix?

During the Olympics this wasn't working at all properly, very poor show and even worse the shear lack of bandwidth that RTE have is astounding.

IE7 embarassingly has compatibility issues with microsoft's own msn messenger. I wouldnt be surprised.

You can try out IE8 Beta 2 which is in the works and claims to have better compatibility (and a porn mode) or you could always try another browser to like Opera or Firefox to see if that doesnt improve the situation.

Firefox didn't work at all, even with all the plugins installed.

It's not a IE7 or windows issue. It seems RTE have really not done a good job. The player is crashing my PC at any hint of a stream interruption. BBC iplayer (and in fact all other radio streams i use are perfect. I sent an e-mail only to get a generic response that they couldn't respond due to the heavy volume of e-mails! I wonder why... cheers

Firstly update to IE9 or IE8 on Win XP, and second make sure your Adobe Flash player is up to date. The RTE Player interface is designed in Flash completely so is more bloated in that regard, and may render slower on older/slower computers

I have the latest flash version and an ASUS E35M1-I DELUXE motherboard in my music PC so I'd be pretty astounded if they developed a player that requires a supercomputer to listen to the radio. The problem always occurs on an interruption of the stream for me (or a moment when network traffic is heavy). It seems they have not considered that some people may not have 100mega all the time. i.e. it doesn't handle dropouts at all. cheers

What ISP are you with? What browser you using etc?

Firefox 3.16.13 I'm in France... In the mountains with 4 mega wi-fi broadband from Alsatis. Typically it's really 2 mega, but ping is not stable. However I don't see why RTE player doesn't adjust for low bandwidth like BBC does... I have no problems with any other streams. Sometimes they quit , but continue as normal when the bandwidth recovers. RTE is the only one that hangs everything. Before the new RTEplayer i had no issues with playing the realplayer link in totem movie player. now i can't use it at all. Backwards step. They should keep the old realplayer link just in case .. I mean it even says beta on the player.. which means not yet production product cheers

Wimax services are in general fairly rubbish (As you say, the Ping isnt stable), coupled with the fact that there may be more lag between Irish and French servers this could be the reason. A high ping means it takes longer for data requests to be sent to the server and the feedback received. Also are you using a VPN? I thought RTE use Geo locale blocking so only people in Ireland can use streams, although maybe this is only for video
