Have any of ye ever gone?
I'm starting to build up a bit of a collection of 'Live from Montreux' dvds. I reckon I'll have to go some year and satisfy my curiosity. Great eclectic line up of performers, though 2008's didnt really get my juices flowing (I'm a bit of a blues rocker at heart).

Have any of you ever been at it and did you enjoy the whole experience?

Never been but would imagine it'd be amazing. They certainly attract the best players most years anyway.

Which dvd is your favourite do you think?

It would either be Van Morrison (a double disc from '74 & '80 I think) or Albert Collins from '92, with a few bonus tunes from '79. Both great performances, Albert in particular is in fine form and really seems to get a buzz from the Montreux crowd.
I also have Bonnie Raitt, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan (where he was famously booed and then returned two years later as the conquering hero) and Gary Moore. All are great shows.

I was considering going before, along with a few friends, but tbh it was too expensive (at least it worked out too expensive). Plus the eclectic line-up put me off, too many poppy bands, being a jazz snob and all :p The Norht Sea Jazz Festival on the other hand... :D

I've never been to any of the major European jazz festivals. If I'm abroad I usually just check out the local gigs.

BTW I agree with Herbieflowers about Montreux being a bit "poppy".

Yeah actually had a look at this year's line-up, I thought it was better tbh. Still a few good concerts though.
