I've purchased a new laptop with a 90 day subscription to Norton. Not intending to renew Norton

    Two questions -
AVG was reccommended as a good free anti-virus program, has anybody here any experience of AVG

I understand Norton is difficult to remove, anybody any experience of that ?

    My OS is Vista

    Thanks Folks

AVG had been great for me until recently: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055358978

    Open to any alternative suggestions.

Avg is quite good apart from that retarded link scanner they bundled with version 8.

At least it can be disabled but the typical user won't bother/know this.

Their latest installation package includes it as a removable extra in the installer so you don't need to use the command line parameters anymore. But you still need to do a custom installation in order to do so.

I'm still on 7.5 here and noticed they updated it today at 07:19. I wonder if it's a fluke or have they extended the deadline again?

Thanks for sharing that. Always do a custom install to minimise installing any unnecessary extras.

You're right about updates still bring available for 7.5 -- saw this about a week or two ago.

I used AVG for several years until v8 came along. Found it slowed the PC down quite a bit; maybe it works better with a higher spec (mine is a 5-6 y.o.).

Changed to avast!, and find it works very well, and doesn't cripple the PC like AVG did.

If you go click on this link here there is a norton removal tool should you have any problems.

I also find PC Tools Spyware Doctor (with built in anti-virus) much better than many out there, including the memory hog Norton.
I have it on three machines I own and I have tried all the rest in my 20+ years of fixing/installing/making machines. They also give for free an excelent firewall by the way which I too have on my machines. Not been harmed by a virus in 2 1/2 years now with them. Caught everything.

Give it a test run some time.

I've seen Spyware Doctor hog up to 400MB of RAM on several occasions. In these scenarios the PC was extremely slow and in Task Manager the memory load was around the 600 mark. Removing Spyware Doctor dropped it back down to about 150-200.
