Do you "need" a mac? i ask this because they are way over priced for what is essentially these days the same technology, right down to the CPU as any Cheap Dell laptop.
So do you need the MAC os or are you just trying to be trendy?

Would you not be better off keeping within your means, as you said... you are a poor student with little money.
Dell recently had a flyer for a laptop for something stupid like €250 i think. Probably ex vat etc but still.

Just to let you know that the current batches of Macbooks and Macbook Pros may be getting an update in the next two weeks. Might be worth waiting if you can and see about picking up an old model at a discounted price.

New models are due to be released i believe. If they are, then the older models will reduce in price when they try to get rid of them. Probably worth your while waiting to see what happens.

Can you not get a loan of the bank or credit union. Interest rates would probably be a lot better than a shop offering finance.

Best option in terms of interest etc. If you have to, PC World stores have finance options, though they are expensive in terms of interest (around 20%) though if you can afford it they have a 1 year interest free option iirc

You have to be careful with the 1 year interest free at pc world. It's actually a 4 year plan at around 22%. To make it interest free you have to ring up their finance company and arrange to pay the full amount before the 12 months. If you don't arrange it then it will go into a 4 year plan at 22%.

The repayments are also very low (they are calculated for a 4 year plan) so you should probably work out how much you'd need to save to pay off the full amount at the last repayment.

    :D

Macbooks are fine machines, reasonably priced. Even better when you apply the edu discount and/or refurb discounts. Nothin trendy about them, they're just uncomplicated workhorses.

    Troll?
Macbooks START at €999 or so, for a spec that is comparable to a €400 non mac laptop! So the only possible reason you would buy a Mac is either because you NEED the Mac OS or because you want one because you like the look of it. And what dare i ask is the meaning of the word Trend?
I will allow that they are "uncomplicated" obviously but for €600 MORE than an equivalent spec non Mac Laptop, which i might add could buy you another laptop and change for some accessories, then they are overpriced fashion statements.

If there is something im missing then please explain and refrain from the name calling.. By the way your post was reported.

Macs are anything but reasonably priced. It's the reason why I'm just after switching back and I'm awaiting a new Dell. I do like their stuff and I'm curious to see what the 9th brings us, but I can no longer justify the premium Apple charge.

Absolutely, I'd say closer to the 600-700 bracket is a fair price for the Macbook. It's crazy that their base machine (€999) comes with a paltry 1gb ram and 120 gb hd. The Macbook Pros are even worse value.

Been thinking about getting a macbook myself over the past few weeks and as has been said above apple are refreshing the ipod and macbook range over the next few weeks (as early as the 9th of this month) with rumors of an aluminum casing on the new macbooks and also a small price drop to make their machines more competitive with the cheaper windows laptops...apparently! So OP I'd hang on if you can..even if they don't drop the prices of the new machines you could probably pick up the current model of whatever mac you're looking for at a discounted price..If you must buy now though be sure to check out the apple store for education..

€429 gets you a much more powerful vostro 1310 than the macbook from Dell. A similar spec would be less except they do not do a spec (with core2 duo) in the model that is as low as a macbook).

I'll agree, that machine will run vista just fine, it's just the price i have to disagree with...that 429 is ex VAT. The real price is 519 incl VAT & Delivery.
