If you could give a piece of advice to anyone looking to start photography, what would it be?

Be proactive. Get out and about to places you wouldn't head to for any other reason with your camera and enjoy the sights.

Study exposure until it becomes second nature, understanding this will give you alot of control over your shots.

Post your pictures and ask for peoples' opinions. Listen to them but don't follow them! Make your own opinion because pictures produced by you are YOUR pictures, not someone else's.

Don't start with the camera! Seriously, I teach night classes regularly and at the beginners section I ban all talk of cameras for the first two classes. I believe you need to start with identifying what makes a good photo and what type of photography you like. A good place to start is take a few publications - newspapers, books and magazines and identify photographs that appeal to you, look closer and ask yourself what it is that makes them good. After that it is the same as the advice given to someone writing a book - concentrate (initially anyway) on what you know.
