Ok, so I have an iphone over a month now...bought it off someone on adverts who unlocked and jailbroke it...it crashed today and I restored it but it also upgraded the firmware to 2.0.2, so now I cannot turn on the phone without the origional sim...which I dont have! I really need a dig out here?!?!

Restoring the phone in iTunes locks it back to AT&T/O2 - depending on where it was sourced. You need to download the Pwnage tool here:

    http://www.iphone-hacks.com/downloads/file/139

Which Projectmayhem also linked to. Run that without the phone connected - it should find the 2.0.2 firmware file already on your system and it may need you to get a couple of bootloader files, just follow all the instructions and don't change any of the defaults. This will build a custom firmware file and place it on your desktop.

Assuming that succeeds (it should really), open iTunes, put your phone into Recovery Mode and connect it. In iTunes, click Restore while holding down the alt/option key on your Mac and point it to the custom firmware you created. Let it do its' thing (should take around 5 minutes or so) and when it's done, your phone will be unlocked again, jailbroken and all on the latest 2.0.2 firmware...

No problem. Let us know how you get on - and don't panic, these days it's extremely easy to unlock/jailbreak the 1st gen iPhone (it used to be a bit of a gamble in the early days!) and it's pretty difficult to completely "brick" it.
