The guitar-playing in the above song is just... a thing of beauty.

Another "blue" band - the Blue Nile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhiQ-a8CkPY

Never heard of pitchfork? They've only been championing both since the beginning of time!

That's still just a niche audience though - they haven't garnered general acclaim.

Lewis and Clarke - I'm surprised that they aren't much bigger.

This is a wonderful song called 'Before it Breaks You'

Of Montreal, Low, Spoon, Okkervil River, Sunset Rubdown, Sun Kil Moon, Merz, Sam Roberts, Frightened Rabbit, Bon Iver, The Hold Steady, Laura Marling...

Well known in some quarters, not house hold names of course. I suppose some - most likely Spoon or Sam Roberts - are one album away from more then indie love ala The National.

Totally agree about Caribou. I got their Andorra album a while back and can't stop playing it, lovely stuff. :)

Here's two more realtively undiscovered bands that have got me all excited lately.......

Yeah, Spoon are a really really good band. Ga Ga Ga is a must buy album

If you like Spoon, then you should check out Sam Roberts and The Hold Steady. Both are 'rockier' then Spoon but have similar pop sensibilities and right incredible songs.

    Them Kids - Sam Roberts

I got one of the Hold Steady albums, the Boys and Girls of America I think but I didn't really think too much of it. Chips Ahoy is a great song and they seem like really nice guys on the live set I got but so many of their album songs sound the same. Spoon impressed me with their adventerous nature on Ga Ga Ga and the different styles

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is basically the perfect indie-pop album, incredibly consistent with more then a couple unforgettable tracks, and as you said very varied. In many ways its Spoon's masterpiece, I doubt they will even come close to matching it nevermind surpass it, and nothing in their back catalogue - even the excellent Girls Can Tell - matches it.

In many ways, practically any album that is compared to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga seems a little flimsy and The Hold Steady aren't really in Spoon's league (not sure any are right now, certainly not in Spoon's little niche) but nonetheless their newest album Stay Positive has half a dozen exceptional tracks complete with the emotional lyrics and memorable hooks that Spoon so excel at. Anyway, I'd give Stay Positive a go, tracks like Magazines and Slapped Actress are pretty hard not like imo.
