    Hi,
I've been looking out for a 30D for a while now but it is currently on the long finger again. I only found out today that the 50D is due to be released in October.

Does that mean I'll be able to get a 40D for the same price I can get a 30D now?

    Cheers.

Well you can get a new 40d for about 600 on ebay now if you want which is pretty cheap. But it should drop in price a bit on release of the 50d.

    there's currently a cashback promotion (€75) for 40D running till end of 21 Sep 2008. here's the linkage : http://www.canon.ie/eos40dcashback/

When would the 50D have a decent review ?

I'm sure photo mags .. and websites like dppreview get a hold of it before it's released ..

the cheapest i can find the 40d at the moment is 560 sterling - which is just under 700 euro.

where can it be got for 600??

also - i checked the terms and conditions on canon's sight and it seems that you only get the cash back if you buy from an IE or UK retailer??

is the 40d likely to come down any/much further than its current price??

    thanks.

If you are a bit nervous about a HK supplier, here is a UK one.

Plenty more out there if you search on E-bay. Make sure your filter is set to worldwide. Good Luck, the 40D is an excellent camera.

    bah .. 50D way too expensive ...

I have €500 saved so far, will also be selling my 2 week old (be 7 weeks old by 50D release) for €700 so I'll be fairly close to the price when it comes out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭workaccount

Yeah I like technology but not premium prices so much. So I wait a while and save lots and lots of money.

Didn't you just get a 40D this year? I guess the 50D is shinier...

I think you are Canon's marketing dream.

The 40D is less than a year old, is a great camera and does not need upgrading, but Canon will continue to release updates as long as people keep buying them.

I am a 40D owner, got it 4 months ago, I am more than happy with it. I will not be buying the 50D as I don't see any real benefit in it.

I'm saving my money to start getting into the world of L series lenses.

Finally I can't see you getting €700 for your camera as it can be bought new on E-bay for less than €600.

Just for the record new cameras on ebay are close to 650. You have to include the postage!

However on adverts.ie used cameras seem to go for the same price or more  . It's something I've found to be a little peculiar about adverts. Normally everything on adverts seems to be well below the price you can buy new - you get some great bargains but cameras seem to reflect the actual bricks and mortar prices more. It's annoying.

Anyway it would be great to see the 40D come down by 150 euro. Anybody reckon it will? ie. get them for 500 including delivery from UK.

Canon's cannibalising of still-current hardware really confuses me...well, confuses on the one hand, makes perfect sense on the other. Can't say I agree with it. I guess their R&D costs must be tiny.

Good point. I guess people keep buying them because of the marketing approach; the cutting-edge spec associated with pro bodies invariably trickles down to the amateur end of the scale, though the act is portrayed as some technological marvel instead of a calculated holding-back of tech. I'm guessing their research and development costs are tiny; if they were exorbitant, they'd be forced to maximise revenues on each product before releasing something with such a small incremental advantage. I think this supports the idea of witheld tech.

I'm still wondering why the 1000D exists.

To be honest, as someone who is going to be buying their firs dSLR in a few months I have to say I am happy with it. Between the 40 and the 50 I would go with the 40, but not until the 50 is out.

I know what I want, what I can use and what I need. If other people want to run around after every new camera meaning the ones I want to get end up being cheaper then I can only say thank you to them!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭workaccount

Yeah I doubt they release the pro versions as often as these!

I like to spoil myself, I'm worth it, if it wasn't for that I'd waste it on Crack Cocaine.

Mine has an 11 month old full Irish warranty, In fact I might even trade it in Camera Exchange as he gave me a good price for the 450D when I traded it in for the 40D. I will 1st see what price Kerso offers for his 50Ds first but tbh I like the idea of been able to bring the Camera back to a brick n mortars shop if theres any probs with it, it all depends on the prices.

Well if you feel you're worth it maybe you should buy L'oreal instead of Canon!:D

I've just read the 5D II thread so will glance at that, fckrs at Canon prob won't release any details on it til after 50D release.
Donno if 5D would be too big for what I would use it for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

5D is the camera I could use for anything I could imagine. Only disadvantage is it's age. However I am waiting and compare value of the 5D Mk.II and falling prices of 5D.

Talking about 50D, it feels nice, however a little small. I had really big issues with focusing in low-light situation in the Croke Park with kit lens. I was very disappointed by that. Unfortunately I cannot compare it to 40D.

And I wouldn't complain about development in Canon. I cannot remember what camera it was, but it had ran out of stock before the successor had been released. There is projected life span of each product and Canon released new camera even sooner than it seems it had been planned. It only shows that they are reacting to Nikon offensive and other players on the market. Sony leaked fullframe as well, not to mention user friendly Pentaxes that offer some advantages to Canon Dx0 series (in body anti shake, weather sealing, colour depth).

Yes but it seems this is now being established by the consumer, not the manufacturer.

That's even better - they are forced by the market not to hold development, but to invest more into development (including setting the production of new products). Good for us :-)

The thing is, I wouldn't call many of the rapid releases a 'development'. Again...1000D.

I presume that 1000 is just opening of new line. 300 -> 350, 400 -> 450. And what after that? 500? I don't think so. It was highest time come up with new line. This one is already too old - five years is too much. Not to mention Rebel(ion) with the US names for the cameras :-)

The line is too old? Do you mean the naming convention is out of date? That's a silly reason to release a new model. Lets be honest, the 1000D has no place in Canons line.

Maybe not to you, but to someone just starting in photography, it will have a place.

There was a 1000 series in the film cameras too, remember :)

But what was so bad about the 400D? When the 450D was launched, wouldn't the 400D have been a a great choice for someone just starting out?

Don't get me wrong, the 1000D is a fine bit of kit, but it's another fine piece of kit on a mountain of fine kit!

Well, it is not about logic from the outside. There are reasons for getting back.
450 become "too good" to be first and cheapest entry DSLR. They needed something to get them back to lower price levels. So the 1000 is new, not replacing "possible 500D", but to be below, as shown.

As per the above link if the two models are going to exist side by side for the rest of 2008 anyway then what are they going to reduce the cost of a new 40D to.

How much cheaper do you want to 40D for?
    They're practically giving them away!
It's serious kit & you have to be willing to pay for quality.

True but the markup is probably quite large so plenty of room to leave more money in my pocket. I'm not expecting them to come down too much as that wouldn't make sense but 100 euro off would be nice.
