Limerick to Sligo by car

whats the best route to sligo from limerick. I have been going the n18/n17 but get badly caught up in Gort/Tuam and mainly Claregalway. During rush hour or around half 2 on most of these places are heavily hit with traffic. Is going via Athlone quicker?

The Roads through Roscommon and parts of Offaly aren't great. Narrow and no hard shoulder and fewer towns are bypassed.

thanks victor, the quicker the gcc upgrade the n18 and n17 the better.
