Why is it that Ryanair suggests that passengers travelling to spain (including balearic and canary islands) require to submit advance passenger information but aer lingus do not (at least not for Gran Canaria, I'm flying with Aer lingus tomorrow..)

Presumably to speed up check-in? I guess if you're checking in online, you'd need to have submitted your API in advance anyway.

I'm travelling with Aer Lingus, checking in at the airport, hadn't thought of this til I just noticed it while looking at flights on ryanair site.

No mention of it on Aer Lingus site...

With Aer Lingus you can do it if you click on Manage Booking at the top of the homepage. Then you get an option for "Provide Advance Passenger Information for travel to Spain".

as far as I know it is for security purposes. They are adopting the US style of data collection on people entering the country on all carriers.

Its came of the Madrid bombings etc.

It is mandatory and easier to do it online.

It is only mandatory for non schengen area passport holders.
