Loud, very very loud... A fender rumble on full blast isn't quite loud enough so a little more then that... Any suggestions?

The Roland Cube 100 is a quality Bass combo. It's on ebay for roughly 300 yoyo's. :)

Depends on the size of the room/venue, but I dont think 100w would be enough if you are playing in a band with a drummer. IMO 300w would be the minimum in this situation.

was thinkin that, may have to up the budget a little ><

Keep an eye on www.adverts.ie and www.buyandsell.ie

Some good bargains to be had from time to time.

For a gig with a sound system and monitors it's fine (bass will be DI anyway). For a small room with little or no front-of-house speaker wattage, it would probably be a little short on power.

Bear in mind also that wattage is not directly related to volume, there's other factors that are pretty crucial too - speaker sensitivity, operating characteristics of the amp, etc.

I disagree, played one a few years ago and it was crippleingly low volumed. Unless they have changed since...

Id recommend a second hand ashdown mag 300. Twould be perfect.

While the Ashdown ABM series would be better ( and a little more expensive :( ) I have a Mag 300 2 x 10 which I've gigged with a few times with no problems. For the price it's good value IMO.

Thats still the same as one of the old mag series if im not mistaken, afaik the real evo 2 series has been discontinued and in its place are the klystrons.

Had a mag myself, used and abused and it still came back for more and was always loud enough. Lucky enough to have a klystron fullstack and at this stage i can deffinatly vouch for Ashdown.

A 100w amp is loads in a small venue. As mentioned above, wattage is not related to volume so once you're hooked up to a monitor you have plenty of power for a small venue. :)

at the moment id be more worried about being able to keep up with a VERY heavy drummer and a wall of distorted noise from a guitar in a fairly small jam room :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Zangetsu

Are Behringer amps terrorable? saw a 450w for a price I could probably afford :p

Only thing I'd worry about 2nd hand is damage. Bass amps tend to get severly fvcked up by people...

Yup go for an Ashdown Mag 300W if you can. I love mine. I go by the rule of doubling the guitar amp power. My rule of thumb for amps in a live setting is:

    Guitar amp - Min. 100W
    Bass Amp - Min. 200W (Preferably 300W)
    PA - Min 1 Kw

Thats the way I always setup.

What about the new Marshall MB series?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

They arent actually half bad at all, and there cheap and loud!!

Definatly, I'm thinkin' of a half stack for myself, I'd prefer a Trace, but the two grand or so price difference is a incentive to go for the Marshall.

There's a couple on Adverts.ie around the 300 mark that would be perfect. One of them is one we use in my band, an Ashdown MAG250 which is hugely loud.

There's an Ashdown Mag 300W on www.buyandsell.ie at present, but the guy is looking for E700  for it. Maybe you could bargain him down. ;)

EDIT: It might just be the head he's selling. It just says "bass amp".

Does a guitar --> bass amp hurt the amp at all?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Nope. Bass into a guitar amp at loud volumes is very bad though

Came through the door today that thing is HEAVY... 2 of us struggled to lift it out of the van. Amazing sound out of it though. The classic channal breaks up really nicely and the modern channal just sounds huge. Much much much much better then the amps I've been using!

Haven't turned it past 1 yet but I'm gonna give it a proper blast tomorrow at practice, can't wait :D

It says on the site that's 51kgs, I just bought an Ashdown ABM 410 and it was only 36.. Still, there'll be plenty of beef outta that beast :)

OP : Did it come with a fork lift truck ? :D

Only joking !! Best of luck with it . :)

Muscle! And lots of it necessary! :D

I can't imagine the band being nackered before they start playing, lol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

We had a temporary drummer this year out in Skerries, so what we had to do was lift my old bass amp (which admittedly was only 27kgs compared to OP's new one) but lifting that thing from the DART station to your man's house was not easy... Plus, being a bassist, it didn't leave my fingers in a good mood for playing! OP, I'd nearly consider putting castors on yours, I'm thinking of doing that for my ABM 410.

I thought of that today when me and my brother were lifting it closer to the door to move to my car later, theres no way I carrying that thing to gigs without wheels lol... I didn't factor in the weight issue when I ordered it, don't really mind though!

Off work in an hour then I'm goin straight to town to put it through its paces :D Can't ****in wait :pac:

One of your bandmates and yourself could probably manage it so long as you have transport, which it seems you do!
