Hey guys was just wondering what the difference was in terms of speed between a type r around a 1999 model and a mirage mivec and which would be the better car overall and pros and cons of both

shouldn't you be considering an FTO GPX or GPvR too?

I'd take the Civic over the Mirage TBH.

civic makes more power, handles better and has more after market parts
but its more common, harder to insure and has more of a boy racer image

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭tooler7

yeah true it really does have that boy racer image id like to get it in black cause 90% of them around are white and dont really like the white car thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

black Civics are hardly rare either!

the mirage mivecs are usually fairly cheap in comparison to the civic, tho the mirage hatches are a bit girly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭tooler7

alot more rare than white but i wouldnt see a black one that often cause i know there everywhere civics but i feel black and yellow you would see the least i think out of all of them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,534 ✭✭✭SV

Ah now..Type R is a far far better car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭tooler7

i know its better built and that but is it a faster car

Easily quicker id imagine the mivecs never make anywere near qouted bhp on the dyno!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭tooler7

yeah ive heard all sorts of figures quoted for their bhp ranging frm 140 to 190 id say round 165 for their actual bhp

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

I've been in both Mivec Lancers and Type R Tegs and the feeling of immense speed was pretty similar. As to hard facts and figures I don't know.

GSR Turbo Lancer maybe? Weren't they 4x4 also?

SiR Civic would be easier to insure than a Type R if it was going to be an issue. ;)

ah shouldnt be to be honest ive been driving 4 years and havent had a claim or anything yet so shouldnt be a prob

Never driven a Mivec but all I can say is vtech is highly addictive.

Drive both and see what you prefere power wise/handling, and the gather info on reliability etc for the final choice.

Not a fair comparison Colm, neither come close to an FTO..:D

OP, I'd take the civic if that choice was forced upon me - best of a bad lot.

i would take an EK9 civiv too, much much much better car than the mivec colt/lancer.

it would also be a better car than the GSR imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I reckon you'll get shafted on insurance on a Civic Type R, that's why I suggested the FTO GPX, you'll get hammered on insurance on that too, but I think it offers more than a hot hatch does.
They're not the OP's thing though, and that's fair enough.

honda civic type r is streets ahead than any mivec ye cant beat that vtech noise its the best around!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

try a MIVEC V6 for music, far nicer than any 4 cylinder car.

That said, I do like the VTEC sound too.

I've an fto mivec wit the veilside front bumper, pure rare and absolutely mint!! But the teg is definately a faster, more responsive car. It pains me to say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

If you're going for a 99 and insurance aint an issue then why not a teg type r instead? Faster than both the civic and the mivec and a better handler! How much you lookin to spend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭bladebrew

are civic type r's really well known to get huge insurance quotes?? was thinking about gettin one next summer perhaps probably a 97 or 98 (maybe a glanza) only problem is a careless driving conviction,5 penalty points and im 24?? will i give up dreaming now?

You will find it tough to get a quote, and if you do get a quote....it will be high!!!

I was about to do that about the Teg i've been looking at the last year or so, but i got on to an insurance company called first ireland and they quoted me no problem on a teg so a civic would be handier and you're 3 years older than me! When i say i was quoted no bother....it was still fairly pricy, 2500 but for a 21 yr old 3yrs ncb full licence etc, even the high excess people wouldn't quote me and these did no probs. It is a lot of money but in fairness i was payin 2500 two years ago for a 1.2L Punto Sportin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭bladebrew

yeah i wouldnt even mind if it around 2 to 2.5k i deserve that! as long as the bank gimme a loan!,thats a good way to look at it 2500 for a punto or 2500 for a teg,,,hmmm:D

Out of the box the type R is much better evreyone has a civic, there is something a bit more special about a MIVEC. As sweet as a vtec does sound you cant fault the noise of a mivec at 8500rpm

Drove my lancer for a year (have it up on adverts now http://adverts.ie/71687 cheaper than a type R) 1.6 few modifications including 1.8 bottom end lifted from an fto. I will beat a type R civic any day.
only touble is as someone else already pointed out the civic will probably be easier to sell. From what i hear and my own experience the MIVECs are not hit as hard as vtecs when it comes to insurance.

    2.5k you don't mind?

with a careless driving conviction and 5 penalty points you're only dreaming to get a quote like that.

    Try 4k.

thats what i thought, when i told my insurance company about the conviction and penalty points (all happened in one go) my insurance didnt go up coz i had just got a full licence, just stayed at the same price,so im still praying:)

A few of my friends have a few points, one of em has 4 and his insurance stayed the same, but i suppose on high performance cars they'll look for any excuse to load on the price
