ipod touch work with mp4 downloads without converting them?

Hi, does any1 know if with the ipod touch I can just copy all the stuff I've downloaded off the internet as mp4's straight onto it and they'll work or do I have to convert them to some ipod format? Ta

You don't have to convert mp4 files.
