Not too sure. Id say if your walking around dublin city centre with your iPod touch it shouldn't take you long to find one

Internet is shoite on Ipod Touch...Get a Laptop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

yup ****e it is, name another pocket sized device that does the internet as well as the ipod touch?

saying to get a laptop is like saying to get a 4x4 to do city driving.

But a laptop is not nearly as portable as an iPod Touch. Personally I'm impressed.

However, if you want to use Internet on the go a lot you may want to consider a small laptop. Or maybe an Archos, although you'll have to pay extra for a browser.

Most coffee shops have free internet, as do nearly all hotels I've come accross.

The Nokia N810 destroys the touch when it comes to internet experience in your pocket and I'm saying this as an ipod touch owner.

never used one of them they're fairly new aren't they though?

i haven't been a fan of nokia build quality for quite some time actually, but this n810 does look interesting going by youtube videos.

I hope that's all you touch. You can get in trouble if you carry on that way.

ok we've kind of strayed off topic here folks so regardless of what device he's using post up wi-fi areas in dublin.

reminder only post up ones that are legal, eg no telling him how to hack the encryption keys etc as that will land boards in trouble.

hi iv only just got a ipod touch and everywhere i go to use internet other than my house i have to have password!! should it work in starbucks and other coffee shops? what can i do???

I think alot of people buying iPod Touch's have the wrong idea about the internet, it isn't free!!! You have to put in a password cause people are paying for them connections like the way you pay for your's at home. You wouldn't be too happy if people were robbing your internet would you?

There are some free WiFi connections put I don't know of any efficient ones, your best bet is if you have Eircom broadband at home you should have access to their hotspots throughout Dublin, other than that you'll have to pay i'm afraid!

Free use of hotspots for Eircom broadband customers is only available until 31 March 2009.

An 8GB iTouch costs 219euros whereas the 2Gb N810 is currently 315 euros, so there's a fairly high premium to pay just to get the higher resolution screen and keyboard but lose storage/iTunes functions etc

Anyhow, where I'm sitting there's several unprotected access points in the vicinity but don't know if they are private or public (hence I'm not posting their location!).

For those in Dublin - Cineworld have free open wi-fi - I used it in the bar and it was very good.

There are a good few places around the city centre - will be posting up legit ones as I come accross them ( and when I remember)

Obviously for any serious use of the internet the iTouch isnt really going to compare well with a laptop, but for quick checking emails, getting scores in a match, checking when a film starts it has proved very useful for me.

To whoever was saying it wouldnt connect for them when they were in a
Wi-Fi area - are you sure that it was an open Wi-Fi system? - was there a little padlock symbol (if so it would be locked) and also what was the strength like?

You may need to adjust your settings. The best way I've found is to go into the Wi-Fi tab under the Settings icon and then select an open network with the strongest signal strength

    As regards settings
    Have your Wi-Fi switched On
    Ask to Join Networks Off

Also under Fetch New Data in Settings
    I have Push Switched On
And Every 15 mins as the frequency

I did find that the Wi-Fi seems to work better under the 2.0.2 operating system which is €7.99 on iTunes. Not sure why exactly this is.

Sin E on the quays has free Wi-Fi - need a password. They're friendly folk in there so ask at the bar.

Also saw a sign advertising Munchies Cafe in the Millenium Walkway have Wi-Fi. Don't know what the story is with is - Presuambly you need a password as well. Would guess that a couple of the other cafes around here have Wi-Fi too. Will investigate further if I get a chance.
Edit : Think I vaguely remember reading something a few month's back about Munchies charging for Wi-Fi. Will look intoit.

TJ Smyths apparently has Wi-Fi - probably need a password - just remember this from seeing a sign in there previously

Pretty sure Spy on South William Street has free Wi-Fi too - don't think there is a password - met a friend in their last week and they were checking emails - will investigate further when/if I get a chance.

    **********************************************************
When I get the chance I will investigate further - hopefully this helps some people out.

If Sun introduce Java for the Ipod Touch/iPhone, as promised, this year you could use those apps for decoding the WEP key from the SSID of which there are an abundance of ;) thanks to a screw up at a particular phone company.
