Do you need a camera for a beginners course?

    Hi Everyone,

    I'm thinking of doing the beginners course at the Dublin Camera Club (http://www.dublincameraclub.ie/facilities/beginnersCourse.html) in September.

    I was wondering if for a course like this, do I need my own camera? At the moment I just have a standard commercial camera (canon IXUS) and don't want to invest in a 'proper' camera until I have the pennies saved and have a feel for photography.

    Thanks for your help!

    catherine

    Hi Catherine,

    You will be fine with Compact Camera for the course. You will have a better idea of what camera you should buy after doing the course.

    I just looked at the programme:

    * Cameras and equipment
    * Films and exposure
    * Composition in monochrome and colour
    * Developing the negative
    * Printing and enlarging
    * Practical workshop session
    * Holiday and travel photography
    * Landscape photography
    * Digital Imaging

    I really wonder about the relevance of "films and exposure", "developing the negative", and "printing and enlarging" for today's beginners who will almost certainly have digital cameras only or are about to buy one. These subjects are very much a minority interest for photographers nowadays. I would suggest that the DCC radically revamp their beginners course accordingly.

    I agree, i wouldn't find much interest in those things tbh. I've developed my own film before but can't see myself ever doing it again.

    This has been discussed & may change in the future. However there is a growing interest in B&W Film work. The darkrooms are actually getting busier. We have had quite a lot of new members who are not interested in digital & want to work in the traditional ways.

    The person who does the B&W Printing is really magic to watch. The idea of working the image also give a good idea of what you are trying to acheive a Digital PP.
