Gary Keegan - High Performance Director

Read a very interesting atricle about him in yesterdays Evening Herald. I have to say I was hugely impressed with what he had to say, its easy to congratulate somebody after achieving success but the success that he achieved or rather nurtured is a byproduct of somebody who can get beneath the surface of whats going on and implement systems & structures to bring a professional edge to things.

I couldnt believe the sh_ite he had to put up within his role and its sad to see that there is a lot of politics at play with governing bodies, his loss to the sport will be hugh at an amateur level and im wondering if he got fed up with the pen pushing prats who seem to put their own self interests before the athletes & the sport itself.

To think that he was pretty much snubbed for official accreditation at the games and then overlooked for the welcome home trip says it all really, it would be a bit like the irish football team heading into a match and asking the manager to watch the game in the hotel.

I would hope that there is some pressure exerted on the people who fcuked up here to lose their jobs and let a good man walk from a very sucessful stint at the helm of the high performance programme but i seriously doubt this will happen. I hope he does well for himself where ever he has decided to jump ship to.

my mate who was around the stadium during the training says he was not too involved. Also i done the coaching course and he could not teach to save his life,. The technique of his hooks was a disaster and novice like tbh! Also he came across as arrogant too.

Mickoo, I think u are missing the point, he wasnt supposed to a trainer and wasnt supposed to be hands on, he was involved in developing, nurturing & orchestrating the programme which was started from scratch and which has other sporting codes lookin on in envy and no doubt these other sports will analyse to death all that was good about the programme (which is simly an endorsement of what was achieved)

This may sound harsh, but Keegan's hoping that Kenny Egan will lead the Irish team in 2012 is a bit off the wall. This does not say much for our hopes of producing a replacement for Egan, who IMO is past his peak in the amateur game and I don't believe he will be a force in 2012.

Meanwhile, the BBC understands that Irishman Gary Keegan has been offered the role of performance director for the newly-formed British Amateur Boxing Association.

Keegan is a former director of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and is now head of the Irish Institute of Sport.

Recent reports suggested Edwards is unhappy with a performance director operating above him, but he is said to have a good relationship with Keegan, raising hopes he could remain in his job until London 2012.

Just read this now. I can't believe this is true. I interviewed him recently and he seemed to be looking forward to getting his teeth into his new role at the IIS.
Politics may be the only thing that will drive him out.
If it is true, then it is Ireland's loss, U.K's gain.
