Garageband is probably a good place to learn the basics, its free and you already have it. You just need to pick up one or more mics and an audio interface (assuming you want to record instruments) and you'll be sorted.

    Laptop I presume.

I'd recommend bypassing the whole audio interface and keep it "in the box". Most DJ's are doing this now.

If you rip all your music to your mac as high quality mp3's using the highest setting in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importing >
    Select MP3 encoder.
    Select Custom Setting.
    Select 224, 256, or 320 bit rate.
    Don't check Variable Bit rate.

Then you can use DJ software like "Traktor DJ Studio" to mix all you want and you can export your mixes out of the program directly to your music library as MP3 or whatever. And it's easier to bring your entire DJ set-up with you. One laptop will do it all. But you will need an interface if you intend to DJ live with a set-up like this. You can also monitor 2 separate tracks by editing the routing options in the DJ software. Send one track out Mono Left and the other out Mono Right. So two separate signals will be coming out your system output. If you know what I mean.

Not the cheapest option but probably the best in the long run.

As for editing; once you've created a mix using the method above you can import it into Garage Band and edit away to heart's content there.
